Mk2 Clocks with a Mk3 G40 Loom

Hi, I've got a mk3 Loom and clocks in my Mk2 Coupe G40, I've checked the plug on the back of the clocks and its the mk3 multi pin plug, which would never fit on to mk2 clocks.

I prefer the mk2 clocks so would like to put them back in, but don't know what to do regarding changing the plugs over, is it possible to cut off the mk3 plug and join up the mk2 soldering it in place?

Has anyone done this? Any help would be appreciated,
