Engine is in bits, what path would you go down?

Hi all, wishing you a happy new year!

So this year, I plan on getting my g40 back on the road

Currently the head is off, I've had some of the exhaust studs fitted back as they had snapped in the head and the old owner had the manifold on by just the top bolts!

Whilst it is off, I am considering porting and polishing and maybe a big valve head.

I have a gt inlet, a 51mm throttle body ready to go on.

I'm unsure on what I want for the bottom end yet, rebuild to a standard 1272cc or go forged Pistons to 1341cc to keep options open and safety.

Is a BVH worth it? Also how does the performance of the engine respond to a port and polish with a 51mm tb and a gt inlet?

Also reccomendations of companies in the Midlands (I'm from leicester) who can help with work would be great too.

Apologies for the vagueness but after around 11years of the car sitting about, it's about time I do it some justice and get it back on the road!

Regards,

Dipesh

Hi Dipesh, happy new year!

To be honest, I'd be tempted to just get it back together and enjoy it!

BVH and 1341cc are good if you want a lot of power but you'll probably be spending £1500 for both those, even with doing assembly work etc... yourself.  To get the head done will be about £500, pistons will be about £500 and there's easily another £500 of bits to buy to get it all together, just for the engine rebuild.

If the engine definitely needs a rebuild then I guess you can probably do this for about £700 using standard head and standard pistons.

If possible I'd probably just put it all together and enjoy it.  Then if you are wanting to do an engine, get hold of another bottom end and head to get done (as I'm sure you know, any 1272cc head will do).

I'm with hayesey. Get it working and enjoy it. Then weigh up the cost/need for performance upgrades.

A standard Gee driven progressively is still massively rewarding IMO.

If you search for power you will always want/need more or come up against the wall whereby the rest of the chassis and running gear can't handle the power anymore and it'll soon owe you ££££'s.

Plus a standard Gee is typically more saleable if you get bored/need rid.

Wise words gents. Thank you for the replies. I agree with what you have said now I've had time to think about it.

I'm raring to go, looking forward to hearing it tick over for the first time!
