What does everybody use?

A cheapy code reader from eBay or vagcom?

Also can't anybody suggest equipment to help set my g up properly. I have a timing light and that's about it atm.

there's very little you can do with diagnostic code readers on a g40.  It's '80s technology.  There are several threads in the FAQ sections on this.  Best bet is to get a multimeter and have a read of those.

I got one of them cheap eBay ones for the r32, works pretty good, on the g40 it just says if there's a fault or not basically but only yes or no lol so not much use.
