with the ATV box in I am driving everywhere at speeds above 60mph. which is killing my mpg. plus i am covering a lot of rather unexciting miles at the moment. so i am looking at the various engine possibilities for my mk2f/3 polo van shell.

Which engine will fit in without chopping the shell? should be reliable and economical

thanks

a 6n 8v engine of some kind?  1.4 8v (60bhp) or 1.6 8v (75bhp).

Or actually, a 3F GT engine.  75bhp, very revvy fun engine.  Will do 40mpg.  Will cost a bit more to get hold of than a 6n engine but fitting will be easier.

Whats your mpg dude? Mine stays between 38-45 on long trips in the G keeping the revs at around 2.5-3k

#3
I was doing about 38mpg, when I had a gt box running at 60mph @3100rpm

Now I have an atv box on my speed keeps creeping up to 70/75mph @ 3200rpm which is killing my mpg so now I get 28mpg

from my house to uni its 20 miles and I stop for lights about twice. so its not town driving

hayesey

might be best to just buy a mk3 golf tdi for peanuts off ebay.

What Paul says really. Can't really understand how you've lost mpg going to a higher ratio box. The mrs polo gained economy going from a 4 speed to a 8N golf box and even more to a 8p box.

Andy

Something's not right if you're only getting 28mpg - unless you're flat out everywhere.

physicsfool

Yeah it's frustrating. But filled up again today. Travelling everywhere at 60mph on my fresh tank from today and seeing how it lasts.

Tav

Buying another car or swapping an engine will probably cost more than you can save by doing it?

physicsfool

Pretty certain this is the cause of my crap economy

Yup, luckily I have a spare that I have covered in por15 and popping on tomorrow. Also one of my coil pack bolts snapped, it had seized to the inside of the coil pack even though there isn't a thread. Is this common?

PeteG40

yep - hopefully you can slip coil off (plenty of plusgas)
i've had one i had to batter coil in half with a chisel
