what model is this gearbox for

ok finally got around to checking out the spare gearbox i have floating around
and just wondered what models of vw seat etc it will fit and what its off

is it any good for a g40 spare ?

need the part number from the top of the gearbox mate - those numbers are just the casing parts numbers.
its the one which sits under the coolant housing when its bolted to the engine

Hi Dennis, the code should be stamped on the top of the gearbox in between the two  top  bolts that connect to the block... wirebrush is your friend :)

that's the right number but I can't make it out from those pictures.  You need to give it a clean.  If it starts "ATV" then it's a G40 box.  There is another code from newer G40s (L reg ones maybe) which I can't remember, much, much less common than ATV though, they are both the same box though.

later models use to have CEK code

Thats a mk4 polo or mk3 golf/vento gearbox. I can tell without seeing the obscured first part of the code, it was built in 1996 ;)
