Hi.
Could somebody tells me exactly all the diferences between the engines of polo GT and G40? The outside of both looks pretty much the same, and I know the diference between the pistons and the camshaft. I'd like to know what is all the other diferences, if there is anything on the head or cilinder block, even valves, what else... I also know that the engine support is different and the PY's block has a place to fix the knock sensor.

By the way, could semebody explains me the difference between the 3F's dist^ibutor and PY's?

Best regards.

Does somebody hassomething new to tell me about this?

Regards.

GT and -40 dizzys are the same

G40s have sodium filled exhaust valves, the block has a provision for a knock sensor and is tapped for the oil return feed.

I think I read somewhere that the g40 block has more webbing what ever that is that makes the block stronger

yeah i heard that about the webbing as well

Do you have a specific question about the differences? There are many including myself that know both engines very well, and TBH its would take a while to list and explain all the differences.

I quick stab is: Pistons (compression ratio), block, con rods, valves, camshaft, injectors, inlet manifold throttle body, pulleys, all the pipe work, ECU and looms are different, plus all the visual differences like the cam cover etc.  That said there any many common parts too.

I didn't know the con rods were specific to the G40?

dont think they are

hmmm. might be getting mixed up between the differences between an S4 and Rs4....!!! they rods are deffo different there!

Andy

Rods are the same, but according to ETKA, bearings are different on 1W and PY.

I'm trying to build a g40 engine, and I have the following:

PY cylinder head,
atv gearbox,
g-lader with pulleys and brackets,

i also have an NZ code engine from a 1990 mk2 golf 1.3,

if i use a stand alone oil system for the charger, can I use the NZ block?

if not i can get hold of a polo gt (3f) engine, would this be more suitable and what do you think the life expectancy would be?

also can i swap the chip from a g40 ecu to a gt ecu or would i need the g40 ecu?

cheers fellas,

Wiw

you need somewhere to mount the knock sensor to on a non-g40 block.  might need to tap one of the engine/charger mount holes too cant really remember.  g40 block supposedly has more webbing inside so should be stronger, cant see it being an issue unless you are going for big power.  if you want to use the normal charger oil supply then you just need to drill and tap the drain hole just above the sump line.

you definitely need a g40 ecu, it's different to any of the others.

Cheers Haysey, what do you reckon the going rate for an ECU is? around £100ish?

some non g40 blocks only have 3 out of the 4 charger engine mount holes... so you might need to weld one on.  I'd seriously think aboutgetting a g40 bottom end.
