Starting problem

G40HR

Hi
I run a couple of G40s and one is a terrible nuisance trying to start. The car has an uprated charger on it from Jabbasport and is chipped before I go any further.
Basically you turn the key, the fuel pump kicks in, and it is trying to start but its like the timing kicks it back every time. After approx 3 attempts she fires and runs beautifully.
I have done everything from replacing all the temp sensors, ignition switch, plugs, leads, bottom end!!, had the fuel rail cleaned, new dizzy, the list is endless. The timing has been checked twice and is fine.
I am at the end of ideas now to be honest. Has anyone ever had the same problem?
Thanks

I assume you've done the normal checks for spark and compression?

It could be the hall sender in the dizzy. easiest way to test is to swap one from a working car.  G40 & GT have the same one but aren't particularly easy to come by.  However, mk4 (roughly 1994-1999) 8v dizzys can be used and should be much, much easier to find in scrap yards, or you might know someone nearby who will let you swap theirs to test.

Have you set the timing properly, with the ecu in service mode?

G40HR

Hi
Thank you both for your replies. I did check the compressions yes and it has had a new dizzy. However I will follow both advices and put a yet another new dizzy on it as well as doing the timing again.
Fingers crossed it might help I hope!
Thanks again

P.S. I run my G40s every day as my normal car to work and back yet all my friend tell me I am mad as they are so rare. Any comments please?

I run mine (when I have tyres) to work and back, 80 miles a day. i was a bit concerned about this at first as the mileage will shoot up (currently 80k)..................but then I remembered one of my favorite sayings; It's a car not an ornament and therefore I'll use it for its intended purpose; Driving. I can't tell you how dull it is in my mates diesel astra van that doesn't even have enough power to pull your pants down, let alone accelerate up a hill (I thought it was impossible to not be able to do 70 on the motorway- this van proved me wrong!).

If it breaks, I'll fix it. If something wears out, I'll replace it. I am in the fortunate position of not having any commitments such as family etc though!

G40HR

Hi
That makes the two of us. No commitments apart from lots of cats and just as much housework! I own 2 of the G40s and VR6 highline which is just as much fun, just not in traffic as it drinks!
I am glad there is someone else with the same ethics of "enjoy it, its a car not an ornament". I look forward in getting into my car every morning so its definately worth it.
As for the Astra van, as luck would have it the paddle clutch in my red G40 blew up yesterday and my neighbour kindly lent me his Ford KA as I try not to put the other 2 cars through too much London traffic. Talk about embarrassing! I have paid extra to have the new clutch delivered in 2 days.  ;D

Im not sure if this is 100 percent for setting up timing, im sure its in the faq

start engine
get up to operating temp (so fan comes on)
rev engine 3 times to 3k
unplug blue temp sender
set timing to 6 deg BTDC with engine held at 2k
plug blue temp sender back in
set idle to acceptable level via screw on the throttle body

I think you have to unplug the blue temp sender before you rev it 3 times. The revs should pick up on their own to tell you that you are in "service mode".
