i have alot of both what my dad reckons is both blue and white smoke coming from the exhaust both when engine is cold and warmed up, i had taken the car up the motorway giving it a good boosting no more than usual though then all of a sudden when i was nearly home doing around 30 the car started to put out alot of smoke from exhaust! so next morning we checked the engine compression and all is fine, aswell as engine is running as sweet as always no stuttering or roughness but the smoke is very heavy and a smell of oil aswell! only thing we can think of is head gasket may be gone but there are no traces or signs on either water bottle lid or oil filler cap! hopefully someone can shed some light thanks!

do you know of any signs that may say it is a chrager seal?

PeteG40

check your boost pipes to see how oily it is in there

i checked the boost pipe today and they seem perfectly fine ???

To state the obvious! What car are we talking about? Your user name got me confused a bit! Are we talking about a G40 polo with a G in it? Are we talking about a G40 with a turbo? A golf with a G40 engine and a turbo?

blue smoke is burning oil.  There's only really three or four places this can get into the cylinders and be burnt.

charger seals - try removing the boost return and revving the engine a few times and see if any oil comes out of here.  There should be a film coating of oil residue in all the boost pipes, any drips or pooling indicates worn charger seals.

piston rings - a leakdown test is the best way of diagnosing this.  You say compression was fine but what were the actual results?

valve stem seals - usually causes more smoke on over-run rather than all the time.  I'm not really aware of any other way of diagnosing these other than simply replacing them and seeing if it makes it better.

head gasket - unusual for it to blow without any other symptoms at all. you normally get compression loss or loss of coolant.  But I guess it's not impossible.  Although a compression test should indicate this too.  Although white smoke is a sign of water/coolant getting into the cylinders.  You can also try a "sniffer" test in the coolant, take it to a local garage for this, it shouldn't take them more than two minutes.  They just dip it in the coolant and it changes colour if there are signs of exhaust gasses getting into the coolant.

hayesey- intercooler 1/4 full of oil and oil dripping out the outlet pipe of the supercharger! does this mean it is the seals? or could it be more serious? Any knowledege of how to fit a replacement kit? as i have seen jabbasport do the kit for around £60 for an oil seal kit would this be what i need?

it's not that bad. your oil seals went bananas!

just get oil seals from peteg40, they are good quality viton oil seals. you should also replace your apex seals and check the bearings and replace them if needed.

peteg40 has all the parts.
