Is it worth it? I had a quote for a drive in and out, labour, plus VAT for £1396.

Or £730 without diff.

Yoof

£730 for a re-conditioned G40 box sounds a hell of alot of cash- what are they actually replacing for that?

Jezza-7

Waiting to hear back from them. What do you reckon is an average price? I was hoping around £500 for recondition.

If its not too difficult, is it easy to remove the gearbox? That would save on costs!

Gear box is very easy to remove, few bolt to undo support the lump under the sump split the engine and box and drop it out the bottom, cost wise I had a 6n box re-cond and it was £170, I would want a new box for what they have quoted you.

Jezza-7

Cheers lee. Have found somewhere local to me so im off there now to see how much they want.

Only thing to remember when removing is starter motor once the driveshafts are out the way.

Oh and i have to drop the subframe too.

Alot of the labour costs there will be removing and refitting the box aswell much cheaper if you do it yourself if you've got time and space obviously, I think fitting a quaife on it's own is around £250, reconditioning the box can be anywhere between £300-500 depending on what they replace  I ended ip doing the quaife myself wasn't that difficult and cost me £50 in all does take a while thouh. There's a few places in Yeovil I'd avoid if I where you one of them being the garage on seaton road near pc world.
Tsr are good in bridgewater, some places won't touch atv boxes and fit quaife diffs think because atv boxes are quite old and can be fragile so they don't wantthe risk of forking out if they bugger anything up. Well that's what a few places told me and I summised anyway!!
What about Jprace Silverstone I know there's been bad reviews of them but thy have had alot of experience with g40 boxes and arnt stupidly priced.

All bearings will be replaced 2nd synchro is replaced and any others that require all are lapped in and all other components are checked.

James Joe had his box done at Jp race and had No problems with it after. Think I might have the recipe for it will dig it out later

Jezza-7

Them quotes were from tsr mate. Might ask if they do a club gti discount on top of that?

Will give jprace a shout.

That would be great daryl. Wish i bought that box off him now, or was it a grippa diff he had?

Jezza-7

Jp race just qouted £150 for labour and around £100 for bearings. Plus VAT. Alot cheaper then anywhere else!

Think a trip to them is deffently worth it!

Andy

Make sure that JP stick your output flanges back on the correct sides, and ask them to replace the layshaft bearings too which are only a few quid.

They didn't do the layshaft bearings on mine, despite being asked for a full new set of bearings and seals - and 2,000 miles after their rebuild it was rattling like a good un. And I didn't notice the output flange cock-up 'til I'd got the 'box full of new VAG oil and in the car...

Suffice to say, when I finally get my LSD put into my spare 'box, I won't be using JP Race!

Jezza-7

Cheers for the heads up andy.

Will make sure that i include the layshaft bearing when going through the bearings with them. But will make sure when its done that i check the output flanges.

When i spoke to them on the phone, they sounded alot better than everyone else and they talked alot more about it, unlike the other 3 places i tried.

When its done will let you know how it went.
