Sump sealant - what do you use?

As title realy, what sealant do people use on there sump gaskets? I've got some loctite quick gasket which is usualy realy good and I was going to use it instead of a gasket as it's a gasket replacment rather than sealant, just wonder what other people use and what's best as I would like it to seal first time hopefully.

whatever silicon based, oil safe, sealant my local motor factors have in at the time. I tried the stuff that doesnt set once but it didn't seal (it was on a gearbox but same principle).

Do you put it on both sides of the gasket or just sump side ?

i've used blue gasket on both sides of the seal - never had a prob. But if i was doing it again i'd probably use soemthing stronger

vw supply a gasket sealent, the part number can be found on ETKA for Mk4 16v lumps. they dont use a gasket at all, just sealent in the indented spacing between each sump bolt.

yea the 20v engines are the same. dont run a gasket just the sealer. worked fine on mine.

I've used blue Hylomar (Aero grade) on both sump and gearbox seals and have been fine. Sump seal was with a gasket and windage tray though.

I used black carplan gastite multi purpose silicone sealant on the sump side, did the job okey.

Thanks for the responses guys think I'll try this loctite black gasket eliminator stuff with no gasket.

Dont mean to steal this topic but if im putting a windage tray on, should i not bother buying two sump gaskets?

Should i just use some sump sealant?

It's a case of either/or really, I have seen both options used and both options work, the 20vt stuff grunge mentioned is good if you go with that option.

the windage tray allready works as a gasket!. check on bar-tek website.
