Hi,
I've noticed a tapping coming from the engine! Not loud but it's there, I've had a play and I'm sure it's coming from the injectors? I put my finger on the rail and I can feel it slightly too and it changes tone a bit,
Anyone had this before and know what to do? Cheers
Jack

hayesey

the injectors do usually tick fairly loudly, have you noticed a distinct increase in sound?

gti jack

i think they have if im honest,i work for vw (not a tech) i asked the work shop forman and he said depending on the injector type there is a switch of some description?
im sure its got louder over time? i thought i read on here somewere that someone will service injectors lol? i imagine some odd things too  ;D

hayesey

a switch to do what?  Yoof/PPP can clean them for you, well worth doing.

gti jack

i dont know, kind of like a relay i guess?
ive just pm'd yoof, at least i know it is common that there loud wich is a relief!

He means the fuel pump relay?

As has been apparent on many forums recently with people going to VW for work on older cars, the techs don't know squat on a VW older than a MK4!

True but it depends on the people who work there, if like my place you have people who have worked there for 30 years plus then your ok,

grungeisdead

without meaning to sound rude, with 30 years of experience you'd expect them to have been able to diagnose your problem?

andy and yoof can do injector cleaning for a very cheap amount, compared to the damage a dirty/sticking injector would do to an engine

gti jack

I didn't ask them to diagnose my problem, I asked my workshop Forman if it was possible for my injectors to tap! He hasn't even heard it it was just a question of "is it possible to tap"
I'm in talks with good at the moment to arrange a time to have them done, just awaiting Reply

ahhh right, in that case, yes they do tap/tick, they switch on each time a spark plug fires, which you can imagine is many times a seconds.

the GT's and G40s have injector jackets, whether this is to simply reduce noise, i dont know, but it does make a difference. try whipping one off and youll see what i mean.

you can also whip the dizzy off and spin it round, with the hall sender still connected, or plug the hall sender into any spare dizzy, turn the shaft and youll hear the noise the injector makes, so you know for reference

as hayesey said, have you heard a discernable difference in tone? it may be worth trying the screwdriver trick (put your ear to it and place it on various places on the engine and see if you can hear the tapping through there) you may be able to diagnose where its coming from.

exhaust and inlet manifold gaskets, if it poor condition can cause tapping/ticking but are pennies to replace, so may be worth considering.

gti jack

im sure its got louder, how hard is it to remove the injectors? is there anything else i should be replacing whilst in that area? :-\
i will try the screwdriver tick tomoz i think, ive just had a new exhaust manifold and gasket,

hayesey

Oh right, in that case it is probably an exhaust manifold gasket leak causing the ticking. Try tightening the nuts. Did you use a proper vw gasket?

gti jack

Well hears the story!
I tried to fit the manifold my self, snapped a bolt in the block.......tried to remove with stud extractor and then that snapped in the block, so it went to my friends garage were they got it out and fitted it, I've checked the manifold and it's not leaking, gasket and a White selant went on it, and I've tried to feel for leaks and list for them and it's not leaking, if I put my hand on the injector rail I can feel them tapping, and if I push them down then the tone changes

scotsjohn

Wouldn't be a tappet sticking would it Jack?

gti jack

I wouldn't know to be honest, i think I'll stick with getting the injectors cleaned first and take it from there, it's not on the road for too much longer as I'm getting a new M3 soon so I'll try the injectors and then I'll strip then engine I think and do some work to it, it runs sweet anway so I can't see it being a sticking tappet but I gues I can only wait and see !
