I'm at the stage where I'd like my quaife in my box now and just had a couple of questions. Firstly when you send a gearbox "rebuilt" what do/can they replace and what do they do ?

Secondly is it realy worth it to get it rebuilt at the same time as fitting my new diff? The box is an atv but it was running realy sweet before I took the car of the road no problems at all not sure of age or milage realy.

Tsr (closest garage I trust with my car) charge £200 to fit a quaife is this a reasonable price ?? Or should I just have a go at doing it myself I've read the guide on here a couple of times and it does all look pretty straight foward. Also alot of people I spoke to said use arp bolt (or is it apr I can never remeber) is it worth or or shall I just stick with standard press fit bolt n re-use them?

well there's no dictionary definition of what a "gearbox rebuild" entails, will differ depending on where you take it but at very least they should replace all the bearings (both sets of shaft bearings and the diff bearings).  Then examine gears, synchro rings etc.. for wear and replace as necessary.  They should also replace all the seals, some might just do nothing but that.

they'll have to replace the diff bearings anyway, I'd at least get them to inspect the box internals and tell you of anything that looks worn or damaged.

£200 sounds good to me, it aint a five minute job and new bearings and seals alone cost £50 from VW (although they'll prob not use VW ones, make sure they use decent make ones).  I would use the standard press in bolts, never known anyone having issues with them.

Cheers for the info hayesey, I rung them up To find out a bit more, they said it's £200 just for labour plus bearings and bolts he recommended using apr bolts as did the bloke from lupo gti did and he said there about £60-70 a set plus the bearings n seals I'm saying more like £300-350 I suppose.
They quoted me £500 for a gearbox rebuild including the diff change wicu consits of all bearings and seals including diff bearing new 1st and 2nd synchro and grinding in the other synchro or somthing like that.  Plus those fancy bolts on top of that price.
When you say use standard bolts do you mean re-use the bolts already in there or go for standard vw's but new ones ??
What did you guys do when you fitted your diffs, rebuild or not bother to rebuild ??

hmm that's now sounding very expensive!

Sod paying £60-£70 for a set of five bolts!!!!  I've never come across anyone who has snapped the standard bolts in a mk3 gearbox, certainly not the case for the rivets used in 6n & Lupo boxes though, they snap for fun and probably why him & a lupo gti bloke are saying to uprate them.  However I'd have no problems with using the standard VW bolts (VW sell a repair kit for 6n boxes which replaces the crap rivets with bolts).  Reuse the old ones if they are in good nick.

It's a bit different with the gripper diff I've got because that doesn't use the press-in bolts, with these the bolts are replaced with some high-tensile, fine pitched bolts which screw into the diff casing.

only just saw this reply hayesey, thanks for the advise mate i wont bother with any fancy bolts then ill still ask them to fit it with the standard bolts and reuse them if there in good condition and only replace them if they are damaged.
i cant realy afford £500 for a full rebuild at the moment either so ill have to skip that box was ok as far as i know anyway so should be ok does £200 for labour plus the price of the bearings sound more reasonable ?
