I drove a few G's before I bought mine and I know the brakes aren't amazing mine are ok but what options do I have to make them better without making the discs bigger??

I got told changing the master cylinder and servo to a vr6 size would help??

Thanks for any advice and comments??

you have a number of options

braking -

256mm audi brakes (need 14s) uses golf 16v pads/discs - hard to source!
tsr conversion - uses stock calipers/pads but bigger discs + spacers - to 270mm (14") or 285mm (15")
caddy forum conversion - uses golf mk2 256mm calipers/carriers (i think!), but spaces out to 280mm (g60 discs) needs 15"
wilwood 256mm 4 pots - needs decent clearance 14" - expensive

servo - you cant get a bigger one in without loads of mods.
Master cylinder - many of the vag range fit, they reduce pedal travel but make it heavier.  common replacement is 22.2mm one off a late mk2 golf gti 16v

which brakes did you go for??

Roughly how much would i cost for 256 discs and mk2 golf calipers??

if you dont want to swap for bigger discs then your best option is to use really good pads.  I liked Ferodo DS2500 or DS2000 pads with the 239mm g40 discs.  As for discs, don't waste money on drilled and/or vented just go for the OEM Brembo ones GSF sell.

I would leave the master cylinder as it is with standard calipers, fitting a larger one will reduce pedal travel before the bite point but will mean you actually have to press the pedal harder to get the same braking effect at the caliper piston.

Thanks for the advice lads im thinking of uprating the discs to 256 mk2 16v disc's but what model audi do i need to find to get the brakes that marry up on the G40??

Do you know how much a tsr conversion is too??

Many thanks jake

Isn't there also a way of using vauxhall parts to fit 256mm discs if you can't find the audi parts.

I believe you use the Vauxhall calipers and carriers, with 256mm VW discs. You need shoulder bolts (with an 8mm thread and 10mm shoulder, not sure about length) in order to fit the carriers, possibly also shims needed to get them square. And new brake flexi pipes too, I think the Vauxhall calipers use banjo fittings. IIRC the bits are from 2.0 16v Vectras and Astras etc, and apparently models with bigger brakes can be used with 280mm G60/Corrado discs and 15" wheels.

The TSR kit's about £300 iirc and you'd need to go to 14" wheels so it starts to get pricey. Works bloody well though.

When running hispec and wilwood brake conversions what mastercylinder is used?

hayesey

currently using a 22mm one from a passat/mk2 golf 16v.

Thanks for all the advice and input lads.

How expensive are the Wilwood 4-pot calipers suitable for the G40? I had a look on Rally Design but don't really know what I'm looking at  ::)

Bout £400-500 prices in rally desigins you got to add vat if I remeber correctly.
