strange knocking

hi all, basicaly on idle there is a strange sort of knocking/ grinding noise coming from the left side of the engine,
i have a suspicion its the alternator, as when you look staight down on to the pulleys when the ingines running
the alternator pulley doesnt seem to be going round dead on centre

any suggestions?
