setting the idle

I took the g40 out the garage today to try and set the idle speed as it was idling around 12k
I let the car run up to temp and then disconnected the blue temp sender and the revs dropped and nearly stalled the car.
I managed to get the revs down to 10k but that was with the screw screwed all the way in. When I re-connect the blue temp sender the revs jump away back up to 12k.
Would i be right in thinking that my ignition timing must be out for this to happen?

cheers for the help
need to get myself a decent timing gun

hayesey

revving to 12,000 eh? impressive ;)

camone

aye aye hayesey, you know what i mean  ;D

Ok doke,

Ive checked my blue temp sender using the method on the link above with the multimeter etc and its hitting the values listed pretty much bang on so I dont think the sensor is at fault.

I stuck the timing gun on the car the other day once it was up to running temp,
Before I disconnected the blue temp sender the Z timing mark on the crank sproket was about an 8th of a turn to the left away from the timing marker on the block and the revs were sitting at about 12.
When I disconnected the blue temp, the z mark moved a little closer to the timing mark (maybe about half the distance it was away when still plugged in and the revs dropped a little to just above 10.
So I adjusted the dizzy position a little to bring the timing mark dead on and drop the revs but as soon as it lined up the engine stalled.
I reconnected the blue temp sender before starting, unscrewed the idle screw a bit and started again.
Same thing happened maybe another 2 times.

I just cant keep the revs up high enough to stop the car stalling. I managed to get the revs down to 10 without it stalling but as soon as I reconnected the blue temp sender it shoots back up again.

Anybody got any suggestions for what I can try now?

Ok ive just re-read what I wrote in the last post and i made a mistake.
The Z timing mark didnt move closer to the timing marker when I unplugged the blue temp sender.

What I should have writen was I adjusted the timing once the blue temp sender was unplugged and got the timing marks to line up but as soon as they were lined up the revs drop too low and stall the engine. The engine will only run with the temp sender plugged in. This cant be right can it.
I tried again and the same thing happened.
I noticed something else though, the 4 branch is glowing red on no. 2 and 3 when sitting idling, not sure if this is cos its reving higher than normal before adjustment?

I'll double check the timing marks tomorrow night. Its a PSD toothie and its not marked which is o and Z. If you are looking at the pully straight on with the markers at the top of their rotation is Z the left or the right marker? I was just going by the diagram in the haynes manual

The car had been running for about 10-15mins at about 1.2k revs and the 4 branch was just starting to go red
and it was well up to temp before I unplugged the temp sender but it still stalled it.

I think ive cracked it.
Double checked all the timing marks and got them bang on when warmed up but still was idling to high.
Traced it back to my accelerator cable. It was routed badly from the pedal and was holding the revs on a little bit so no wonder it woudnt go bellow 1k
Seems to be all good now, just got to fix the other problem of a big water leak now with some decent hose clamps
