Many thanks

Hi and welcome!

A few main ones, if its a G40 your after, are the service history of the car and defently the charger!

Charger is important. Make sure it has proof and has been done every 40k i think. Mine didnt but im lucky it still runs, prob not for long.

The ones i viewed before i bought didnt have no rust spots but there not all the same.

If you go and view some cars get a torch and get right under the car and check everything out, especially behind all the plastic bumpers and inside the wheel archs.

There prob is more but i guess this will help you.

Hello!

Unless insurance is an issue, then go straight for the G40, you won't regret it! Chances are if you buy a GT you'll end up wanting a G40 anyway!

If you can get the battery out, check underneath. Some seem to be fine, others rot away (mine). And as Jezza says, plastic arches are water traps, some people seem to be happy knowing they're arches are rotten because it can't be seen (You may already know this from your previous Dub ownership). Also check for damage on the sills due to incorrect jacking.

Don't buy the first G you see, look at a couple. Lots are enthusiast owned and will be very good, but plenty will have a done the rounds with the Lax Bowels crowd.

How hard is it to put a 1.8 20v T as once me and a mate once put on in a mk1 golf our selfes

Welcome!!

Putting a 20V T into a mk3 is not really worth it by general opinion. A whole lot of hassel and an engine thats too big and weighty for such a small car! You would be better spending the money on a G40 engine and getting big power out of that for similar money. A turbo conversion on a G40 'py' engine using a k03 can produce approximately 200bhp and give you all the power you will need..

Sounds a better plan then g40 T MMMMMM!!!!

A 1.8 20v has been done before. The Germans seem to be a dab hand at it the crazy fools and there was one in the UK with the engine in the back running sub 11 second quarter miles but has now been sold. Worth looking into if you're crazy enough and have plenty of cash.

200bhp with a K03 and 1341 pistons on a PY lump is more than adequate though.
