please help i have a polo mk1 g40 but the only radiator i can fit in it is 5cm to short its not overheating but the fan is always coming on and the engine gats very hot very quik. Does anyone have any ideas about what i can do. Thanks

Nick_s runs the 380mm core not the 430 core on his 1473 cc g40 and not heard of issues.

Before you blame the rad i would look at other things like thermostat, water pump etc.

PeteG40

very true rae

could be that the water pump isnt pumping very well, the flow round the engine isn't very good.

Could also be that the gauge reads wrong!

might be worth getting an air-to-fuel ratio meter hooked up (perhaps at a garage?) to see what the fuelling is like, could be running lean if it's too hot.

hayesey

also, what is the radiator like?  is it an old one?  perhaps it's silted up?

Nick_S

Mine does run a little hotter than i'd like. This is mainly due to ignition timing though, as its not spot on for my set up yet. Coolant temp never gets near the red though, just sits around half way on the mk2 clocks gauge. It doesn't help having the equivalent of a mk3 CL radiator on a mk3 G40 though. Will get round to a custom alloy rad made up at some point.

I know the g40 derby I have just purchased, has got a charge cooler and runs aquamist to keep the temps down. I will speak to Kam when I pick it up at the weekend about running temps and how effective it was

Cheers guys much appreciated. Its a new radiator and is a 380mm core but when i fun it for 15 minutes the fan comes on but the guage does only go half way but the engine gets to hot to touch after about 20 mins but maybe thats normal and also i no my pipes are silted up becouse i keep flushing it all through but i am still getting brown water appearing. Do you think its ok to use aslong as the fan keeps the temp guage to half way even though the engine feels very hot, atleast until i can afford a custom rad. Thanks again.

Also sorry whats a charge cooler and runs aquamist. Im a bit new to all this but an AMAZING Engine i must say  :o

PeteG40

the temp switch in the rad might not be working at the right temp.  Is that and the fan 2 speed (like a g40) or single speed (like original mk1)

scottiemayes

i would seay the fan is only 1 speed and ill have to get a new switch too then just to make sure its not that. Cheers again

Personally, I wouldn't be too concerned about the coolant temperature as long as it remains in a controlled state - 1/2 way on the guage should be fine. I'm not surprised the fan comes on
after a 15 minute blast, fairly normal I'd say.
Try reverse flushing the cooling system with the heater matrix disconnected. Then reverse flush the matrix seperately, it's surprising how much crap gets caught in there.

Brilliant thanks alot all feeling much more confident about it all now 8)
