hi all, i have now taken my g of the road for a winter refit to sort out my chassis mainly with a subframe sort the brakes out n a few other bits here and there.

just wondering what people opinions where on brake upgrades, my brakes are ok but they could be a hell of a lot sharper there standard at the moment with new vag discs and mintax pads, i will be replace both entire brake drums for new ones and i was wondering what to do up front im going to fit a 22mm master cylinder from a gti 16 mk 2 golf or is it 22.5?? and i was either thinking of buying the vaxhall brake set up for sale on the classifieds at the moment or wait and save up for the wildwood 256 4pot upgrade.

The question im asking is is it worth spending the extra wedge on the wildwoodset up or should i just use the vaxhall brakes, opinions please :)

insted of getting new drums do a rear disc conversion, you can get them off a mk 2 golf, ive yet to do mine. mine are standard at the moment but i have put the mk2 cylinder on mine, personly i think its worse. ive got same problem as you with the front so i would be interested to see how this one goes.

I wouldn't bother with the rear disc conversion really, unless you use mk4 golf calipers you'll probably just find they like to seize up.  It wont make any difference to the braking of the car.  You'll also have to make your own handbrake cables.

I would go for the 256mm audi or vauxhall brakes if you are just using the car on the road.  The Wilwood setup is ace but probably not worth the extra money just for road use.

Another choice, if you're running 14"rims, is the 270mm kit from TSR. At about £275 I reckon it's expensive for what you get ( drilled/grooved discs, predator pads and the bracket to re-locate your caliper). It really is the business though and you still get lots of feel in the pedal.

i think i will replace the rear drums as i was gooing to do anyway cause i live on a hill n my hand brake is pretty crap! and will probably go for the vaxhall/audi set up because im too much of a whip to do any track time !!
Other than the vaxhall setup for sale at the moment in the classifieds what parts do you need to do the audio conversion r they just audio 80 calipers or audio 100 calipers mk2 golf discs and pads ?? do the calipers bolt straight on

You have to use a audi 80 quattro or coupe quattro calipers and carriers, golf 2 256mm discs and pads...
Sometimes drum brakes have more effective handrake than disk brakes...

For that setup, do you need 14" wheels?
