Well guys the timing belt snapped at 3 oclock in the morning on my way home from work, so am in the process of stripping the head off. The problem is i was told it was a big valve head and have receipts to prove so what i need to know is where can i sorce these bigger valves or what engine are they out off?

Also with regards to fitting a new belt and timing it do i have to remove the crank charger pulley to do this and drop the engine at that side to be able to see the marks?

PS anyone know the price of a head set gasket kit and bolts from VW.

Cheers guys

valves where £100 from jabba sport a while ago donno if they still do them, thats just exhaust valves though as thats the only ones you enlarge.

timing mark is on your bottom pulley.

Jabba still do the big valves I got a set last week.

it might not be the simple matter of just changing the valves and putting a new belt on, the head could be damaged if the valves have smashed into them and the same goes for the pistons, they could be damaged due to the valves hitting them.

VW charge £5 per head bolt which adds up, i have always used GSF standard non G40 ones (G40 ones are 1mm longer) and they are £1 each.

As for the headgasket its around £25 for a genuine one but might be worth changing it for a metal one from a 6n which is around £15.

cheers guys, yeah i fully understand that there could be alot more damage than just valves will just have to wait and see.  According to my haynes manual the crank timing marks are on the oringinal supercharger crank vee belt pulley, is this correct if so am fukd because i dont have this i have psd toothed pulleys and i cant see any marks on it??

Any help?
cheers

do you not have the original pully?

GAF2

no mate bought the car with the toothed pulleys already fitted.

Dan

Should have two lines on the pulley, if not make you own. Find TDC, make or use the original pointer and then mark on the pulley.

GAF2

cheers mate thats what i was thinking just a bit more messing about you know.

Robin

i can't see you getting away with no damage, every cambelt i have seen snap has mullered the pistons so i wouldn't worry about TDC etc just yet!

the PSD crank gear will have marks on the side of the teeth.

GAF2

yeah your right guys after a clean up i have found two marks on the side of the pulley, is the first one tdc 0 and the second Z for ignition timing?

hayesey

they should be either side of a single tooth which marks the TDC point as far as I'm aware.  Don't think you get an ignition timing mark on these so you need a timing light with an advance dial on it.

GAF2

sound yeah they are either side of a tooth, also what was the metal pointer you line it up with connected to because i think when my belt snapped it has taken it with.

cheers

Robin

have you found out why the blet has snapped?

GAF2

to be honest i think it was because it was an old belt well over due, you were right robin bent exhaust valves well at least one havent actually got the head off yet.
