Ok So I just built up an eaton polo for the 2nd time it seems to pull great etc but even after cleaning out the dome gauge for breather connected to a catch tank I had oil come out of the dipstick I reckon only when its under a good load.
From this oinformation I am going to do a compression test etc also the head gasket but htis has been done just before i bought the car and I seen pics of the bore and it seemed ok
question should the dipstick clip be tight i notice mine is loose and won't actually clip
question If it is the rings/bore should I do a 1341cc upgrade i have the cam etc already need bottom end and all that
any help would be great cheers

if the bores really are worn then yeah it might be worth a 1341 conversion, it's up to you really.  Don't under-estimate the costs involved, you'll probably need to spend at least £700-£800, don't forget you'll need some kind of remap too.

my car was also spitting oil from dipstick early thing year. i had 1 melted piston another broken one between the top 2 rings had a hairline score in one of my bores.
what i did was apart from a couple of pistons was,
stripped the engine, honed the bores a bit, but not too much since my engine has 230K,
got a set of rings for all the pistons approx £120. (cheaper than rebore and pistons for people that dont have £1000 spare)
new shell bearings, head gasket kit and any other gaskets you disturb in the process.
this cured my oil leak 6k ago and she is  given death on a daily basis. excellent wee car

£120 for a set of rings! ouch.  I paid £8 for the set that are currently in my G40 (since GSF were selling off some stock).

i know it was a bit steep. they were gen ones. i try only to put gen vw parts on the 40 unless it costs something stupid like front shocks vrom vw were about £300 per corner when i priced them 3 - 4 years ago, koni's were cheaper

front ones not surprised because I think VW sell them as a complete assembled strut only.

i went to my local vw a few weeks ago to be told they dont do piston rings anymore.

ok cheers for coments it pulls great too might just do the rings etc if I can i want some fun before i 1341 the car has been in the making for a while since I had to sell my last one this was by g40 ticket back the thought of waiting is not good at least I have a garage lol

you might still be able to get rings from GSF.  When I bought those £8 ones they said they weren't getting any more in but then I've spoke to other people since then who say they've bought some after that.  So maybe GSF changed their minds and decided there is enough demand for them.  Failing that your best bet is a local engine builders.

if you are struggling to get rings give Agra presision engineering in dundee a phone they do alot with car engines ie porting, spray metal, overbores, pistons, think they do the odd part for rally cars too. Tel 01382 229333. and they will send the parts to you.
I got my charger shaft spray metaled and re-machined, spot on job for approx £200
