fitted a new timing belt a few hundred miles ago and could here a sound earlier that sounded a little like fan belt slipping on a car. so i pulled into my garage, opened the bonnet and noticed the plastic cover on the timing belt was slightly loose, pulled that back to see that the timing belt seems to be wearing on the side closest to the cam, there was also a few small metal filings near the belt. dont worry im not going to use this until i sort it.

so i assume i need a new belt but what could have caused this to happen, wrong tension on belt, water pump fecked etc.

any ideas people would be greatly appreciated

I guess it's running somewhere, you'll have to get it stripped down and find where it's been running then figure out why.

g40chris

what do you mean running? im assuming its the same as rubbing

im going to turn it over by hand now just to check that there is no damage on the pulleys. other than that im going to look at the cambelt cover as that was loose so im thinking this could have been catching somewhere

supercharged spaniel

one of the metal clips that holds the cam cover on wasnt caught inside was it?  rubbing on the belt?

g40chris

one of them metal clips was missing when i just looked but the plastic cover is held on at the front of the head with a small bolt. noticed that this was missing so the whole cover at the cam pulley area was moving

just done this but the charger belts are rubbing on the cover now.

getting a new timing belt tomorrow

oops, that was a typo, I meant to say "rubbing". If it's bad enough to be causing metal filings then I reckon it'll be obvious where it's rubbing if you take the belt and covers off.

g40chris

does the belt have metal inside it, seems to have rubbed through to the metal if it has

how many teeth are on g40 timing belt

gsf list 2 different belts and vw cant get any for me until friday

hayesey

one will be a squaretooth belt and one a round tooth belt.  90% chance yours will be round tooth but you can tell by looking at the shape of it.

g40chris

looks like a square tooth to me

the belt has straight edges on the teeth anyway

g40chris

just ordered this one from vw  052109119 toothed belt

they said that this one matched my chassis number anyway so no g smiles until friday when hopefully my map will have turned up and i can test the car out a little better

g40chris

picked up belt on friday, the plan was to fit this saturday

started on saturday, took plastic covers off, took charger belts off, took aux crank pulley off.

then took the lower plastic cover off which covers the timing belt crank pulley. was totally shocked when i found a allen head bolt in the which must have been bouncing about. proper dodgy. seeing as this was on the outside of the belt i am assuming that this has helped to wear the belt on one side. so i carry on and loosen the crank pulley bolt, set the timing mark on the top pulley so i can mark where the botom pulley should be.

another massive shock, looked down at the bottom pulley and there is a big chunk out of it on the side the timing belt has been wearing. so i popped over my mates house as he had a spare bottom pulley i could use. came home to fit this instead and realised that the belt vw had gave me was wrong. the part number on the belt and the box it came in was correct but the teeth are spaced way to far apart than the one that is on the car.

i have a goodyear belt fitted to the car at present

how could this pulley have cracked like it did, the car is running great though. how hasnt this caused anymore damage?

hayesey

you've got a square tooth belt when you need a round tooth one.  As for the pulley, no idea.

g40chris

they told me that my registration and chassis number came up with this belt

as there was a choice of 2, they said this was the correct belt for my car.

does the round tooth belt have more teeth and closer together. the pulley look like they are square section
