as above i woz thinking is it likely to be worn bushes if so does any1 make a repair kit and how much

and my temp gauge on dash isnt working im guessing its the black temp sensor from what iv read on site is it worth replacing then blue 1 as well

any help would be appreciated as im new to vw's always drove jap stuff in past

there's a ball & socket thingy at the bottom of the gear stick which you can buy as a "repair kit", I think GSF do them as well as VW.  Then there is a bush on the front of the gear stick box which the selector rod goes through, if this falls to bits (which happened to me the other week) then the stick will be all over the place.  You can buy the bush from VW.

Temp gauge could be the black temp sender or the wiring from that to the dash, or the gauge in the dash itself.

Unfortunatly gsf do not do the fear linkage ball and joint. I'm affraid it's only a vw thing. I know this as I just went through the process to find one and can only get it from vw. Unfortunatly the bad news is that the bit that has the rubber ball on it is on back order so could take a few weeks. Check scrap yards!!

well GSF still list it on their website, just found it now, part code 71708.  £5.50 +VAT.

I changed all three and mine was still a little sloppy..turned out to be some spring in the box..i dont understand how or why but thats what the gearbox specialists told me. its still not great mind not sure how stiff theyre supposed to be but its nowere near like newer cars.  I changed the ball joint thing at the base of the stick..i bought both gsf and vw ones and the gsf one was pap, found the plastic very brittle compared to the vw one.  The gear selct 'finger' which connects to the rod coming out of the box and the bush i think hayesey is going on about inside of the little box with the ball joint in but i still wasnt happy so mentioned it when i got the box rebuilt.

yeah it's springs inside the box which pull on either side of the gear linkage that actually make the lever return to centre when you move it from side to side.  These can come off sometimes.  I've taken a box apart once where the spring had completely come off and was stuck to the swarf magnet inside, luckily it had got onto that before being mashed up in the gears (and probably breaking the box)!

to be honest mines never been as tight as I'd like it even after the rebuild..if I got it done again I'd get those springs renewed with new ones to make sure it's fresh but never mind

defo worth changing the other stuff first though..wouldnt be too pleased to have a box explode just of a daft spring mind eeek!

yeah 12 is it actually, a single spring.  For some reason I was thinking of the two springs at the end of the selector rod inside the box.

Maybe it was one of those they replaced on mine hayesey instead of the one rae mentioned as mine still isn't as good as I think it should be. Doesn't effect driving at all but nobody likes a sloppy stick lol

when you say it's sloppy, what are you comparing it too?  The gear stick in a g40 will never feel as tight as the one in more modern cars.

hi thanks for the advise will give vw a ring and get a repair kit and when i say sloppy i mean that its wobbles about alot and i only drive newer cars at work as i like older stuff meself

was more aimed at spaniel really since he seems to have already replaced the bushes and still thinks there's something wrong when it could in fact be just that the gear stick in a mk3 polo just isn't very precise, even when compared with things like mk2 golfs.

mines same, i changed the ball and socket thingy last month and its still sloppier than kerry katonas fanjita. must just be how they are.
