Hi all I just bought a 1.3 K reg genesis and was wondering if its possible to convert to a G40 ?  Have I got the same block or has the G40 got uprated valves and pistons ect....

Is this a relatively simple conversion or is it a total nightmare of a job to do ?  I've owned a renault 5 GT turbo for a few years before so I know the basics of a little turbo super mini and after watching a few youtube vids I'm very interested in a G40 or likewise.  Im fairly mechanical minded so any technical ish posts are fine by me.  Thanks in advance for replies, and if any links to various sites to purchase from would be appreicated.  ::)

hi mate,

it's a common conversion.  The way to do it is to find a complete g40 engine will ancillaries, ecu and loom etc...  A crash damaged car is ideal.  Don't expect to be tripping over these in scrapyards though, VW only ever sold about 500 of these cars in the UK and even the newest ones are 15+ years old now.  They are easier to source from German ebay but that comes with courier issues extra risks....  Keep watching the for sale sections on here & clubpolo.co.uk though and one will turn up.

So converting my exsisting engine is a no no then  :P

You can do it, but there are a few small differences on the block, and it will end up more expensive than a conversion

the bottom line of it is no you cant use your existing block. i mean it would fit but it wont last long..pistons are different etc.  as hayesey said find yourself a complete conversion..finacially this is the best way.

I went thru all the differences at my local VW Garage using Etka on their screen
and you can do it but you will need the following.

Four G40 Pistons at £90 + vat each. This price is for piston Kit complete with rings.
Conrod Big end shells as they are G40 specific as standard won`t last long.
Main crank Bearing shells are same throughout the range.
Full set of G40 exhaust Valves as they are Sodium filled for heat dissipation.
G40 specific Head Gasket but the other Gaskets can be cheapish GSF items.
Then you will need-
                           Inlet Manifold
                           Exhaust Manifold or 4 branch
                           Throttle body
                           Intercooller
                           Isv
G40 ECU and Engine bay wiring loom
                           Boost pipes
G40 gear box as your own will soon run out of steam

And i`m sure i`ll have missed summat somewhere.

....and among other minor bits not mentioned by Fred....a supercharger !! ;)

plus you need to modify the block for things like the charger oil drain, knock sensor etc...
