Title: My g40
Post by: Martyng40 on November 16, 2016, 08:54:42 pm
Hi guys....
I picked my first g40 about 4 months ago.
After a bit of fettling with a second fuel pump and a jerry can of super up she went and ran fine... lazy fuel pump and rotten tank were diagnosed by my friend mechanic....

Few things I'm looking for anyone got any history of the car.... I do have a folder of receipts but just wondered if anyone know the car. I purchased it from my brother who had it as a never started project... and he bought it from a local guy I know....

The reg I K337 AJM.

Also I have a receipt from Jabba sport for a pulley upgrade and chip... anybody shed light on this... I'm a roofer to trade and like to think I know more about cars than I do.... I'm honest.... I know nothing....

Mortgage on the house just gone through so wife's opened the purse for the polo to start so hopefully be on the road this year with an overhaul of the bodywork and respray next year (already planned with body shop)...

No major issues except passengers door lock stuck and can't seem to get in at it and electric windows not working.... (these stock or aftermarket????)

Only other thing that gets me is someone's taken all seat belts out and fitted two sparco harnesses.... cool but not practical.....

Wife's hoping we can come to a meet next summer with the car and meet some of you guys.....

Any help, info, history or anyone wanna guide me on part finding I'd appreciate it....

Sounds interesting - some pics would be nice. My personal opinion is to keep them as stock as possible, though I do appreciate the more wilder tuned cars out there. Handling isn't great so I'd recommend at least a lower front brace from PPP which are about £40 posted on ebay & a bolt on job.

Some Gs had electric windows from the factory, not many though I believe. It should be obvious as the switch gear etc. should look factory, though they could have been retro fitted factory items of course. Things like sunroofs, headlight washers, electric windows & fog lights were options - essentially part of what made the G40 uncompetitive with the Golf as the price racked up when 'speccing' a G to MK2 Golf GTI base spec.

The pulley & chip should take you to about 130bhp as the supercharger spins up faster producing more boost due to the smaller (68 or 65mm) pulley. The chip causes the ECU to retard the ignition & increase fuelling to keep the mixture as close to optimum (Stoichiometric) as possible to prevent detonation (lean conditions with too much Oxygen) which will lead to pistons melting, valves burning out & heads cracking.

I'd be looking at getting the supercharger rebuilt as a matter of course, PeteG40 on here is the man to talk to about that, if it goes bang it will be a massive problem. It may be worth having a look on the charger for any serial numbers scribed on from Jabbasport, then you can contact them for any potential service info. If it has been done recently then you may just get away with changing the internal drive/timing belt. Service interval on a stock charger is around 40,000 miles & with a chip & pulley I'd be looking at 20,000 miles.

I'd also have the injectors cleaned & tested as if one of these goes lean then you will also have a problem, I believe YOOF on here is the go-to man for that. You may also consider an Ali radiator, I did as my temps got a little bit 'twitchy' in Sheffield's rush-hour traffic, the Ali radiator sorted this - they're around £120 if you shop about.

The rest of the mechanics are essentially simple Polo mechanics & things like the cam belt & water pump, oil & oil filter, air filter & plugs/rotor arm/dizzy cap/leads should all be cheap (plugs aside) & easily available. I use Euro Car Parts & VW Trade Parts Services for Quantum Synta Oil & genuine filters. I'd be budgeting around a £700 - £1000 all in with the charger rebuild, though you may get change. A Haynes manual will be very useful & these are easily available.

As for missing bits like handles & seat belts etc. there are loads on ebay. Search 'Polo2F', 'MK3 Polo' or 'Polo G40' for bits-a-plenty, though some stuff is getting difficult to get, for example the 'PoloG40' rear badge & the 'Supercharged' script. Expect to pay more for certain G40 specific parts too, such as rocker gaskets. Again, I think PeteG40 on here keeps or can get some of the parts you might need.

Getting the handle open might require some force with a screwdriver. I have some odds & sods of handles & keys etc. I can sell you cheap to help you out if need be. If you're having the car painted anyway then I wouldn't worry too much.

Hope that helps. They're great cars which are very rare now & really get under your skin, as a recent new owner my self I'll be very interested with you're progress. I keep updating my 'build' thread but my car was a fairly well known car so was well looked after for a lot of it's life. I bought it after a slight downward ebb of ownership & spent a fair bit of time & money putting things right.

You've probably seen it but here's my thread, it's probably a little trivial at the side of some but hey ho.

Thanks for your reply mate, my brother is a Vauxhall gold certificate mechanic so is my mate brother had her for about ten years but kids and marriage stop it returning to the road... he got the charger rebuilt locally by specialists.... I plan a stock look although I like the OZ superleggeras that are on it so they may stay... it does have a full suspension kit but might need replaced now... I've been passenger twice to him and loved it... then tried to buy it for 6 years... only when he wanted me to extend his garage so he could work on cars I told him I'd take the polo to save him cash.... and a mere £500 were swapped hands...  bargin.... I think.... has a full ss exhaust too... windows look factory in bottom of centre concole but cheap bungs in door cars made me wonder.... has a sunroof too...

Just been for a roll in the garage with the g and reading your post again..
It has g badge on boot but not supercharger below.
Has a debadged grill so nothing there...

receipt from jabba for avo adjustable kit
65mm pulley and chip kit
Induction kit...

Will try ad pics but stuck in the garage which is a bit tight... will see if I can load the ones on my phone... pre-purchase photos

The cheap bungs are probably factory, I think they only made one type of G40 door card. If I recall I think my mk2 16v has bungs in.

I don't thing they all had the supercharged script, the one on the 1993 G40 sales brochure doesn't.

Oh well it's a 94 k so that's a bonus... know it had an original grill but brother changed it for some reason....

I think the supercharged badge was an option that some dealers chose to put on the car.
If your interested in a replica try here  8)

I went for silver as oppose to the standard red. (Think it looks better on a red car)

Its not grey is it? There used to be a guy on a previous forum who had a really nice grey one on superleggeras.

Welcome by the way.

The electric windows will either be dealer fit or a previous owner has added them; I don't believe any Mk3 Polos came from the factory with electric windows. A G40 I used to own had electric windows with proper VW switches fitted in the centre console and bungs in the doorcards but the wiring was just done with cheap connectors; they got stuck down in the pouring rain once.  It also had central locking (which I removed) and I found a tracking device hidden behind the dashboard.

Hey no it's a black one. The jabbasport receipt it to a guy from Abbots Langley.... but I'm in Dumfries.... (easiest way to describe where i am is Lockerbie... everyone remembers the plane disaster...)

tried to upload a photo but to high of resolution for here.......

I have a fuel tank from them on my G40, the pipe needing some 'encouragement' although the gap between my sill/rear beam mount is tight. (standard coupe issues)

It's been on a few years and still seems good although my car has probably only done maybe 1.5k miles in the past 2-3 years...

ATP did good service though in terms of delivery and packaging!

Everything in and all correct.... and nothing... she's just turning over and that's it.... any help please!!!!

Getting fuel to engine as pulled pipe off and got the pressure I wasn't before.... got a spark too...

Do you hear the rear fuel pump prime and run? It's not quiet so should hear it when you turn the key.
I had a very temperamental ecu relay which stopped the engine firing properly.

Otherwise I would take the distributor cap off and make sure it's facing 1 at TDC. Also had a Dizzy that was put back together 180 degrees out
Title: Re: My g40
Post by: Martyng40 on January 21, 2017, 02:57:50 pm
It's not firing at all but can hear the pump in the back...

Where's the ecu relay?? Not really carwise...

haven't had the dizzy off but might be worth a look..

Any other pointers welcomed..

Cheers for you reply

So spent the last few hours in the garage with olop.. as she's been named...

Took the plugs out and gave them a good clean and refitted then took the leads off and refitted.... in the correct order.. turned the key and bang.... PANIC...  called my mate said excess fuel try again... nothing...

Oh no I've blown it... took the dizzy off and he said try it 180 round... redone and started but only on the throttle soon as I let off she cut out.... so he suggested moving the throttle idle up and been running ok so think it just needed to warm up....

Apart from oil and coolant change what else should I change before trying the dreaded MOT???

Also would it be wrong to take it out at about 4am for a rip along the bypass and back to the garage...
Surely the police would understand it's a G40 and I can't wait to go a run!!!!!!

Resisted a drive the other night but only just....

Done an oil and filter change tonight and replaced the coolant after a flush... all seems fine but got quite warm (run time 20mins). Gauge showed just above the 70... normal???

Really pushing to get it mot ready as wanna rub my brother the mechanics face in it...

So anybody anything else I should be looking to do or check.....

Also does any of you guys who have multiple cars/shells sitting have a complete set of seat belts as mines has two sparco harnesses.. and if so how much would you look for them??? Not desperate as I'm happy with just two seats but wife thinks the kids should get in too!!!  Although she did say it was too noisy when it was running all night.....

When under the front last night doing oil and that noticed there's a bar/rod comes from with wheel round front by radiator area and has like green square blocks/bushes.... standard or upgrade??

Just think it looks bit like one of the sub frames someone was selling or is there a standard bit there normally....

Sorry for lotech speak but no mechanic...

Brake compensator valve is adjacent to the nearside rear beam to body mount.

Cheers for that will get a look tomorrow as bit late to go for a roll in the drive...

Can I question what it does??? And if it's leaking is it a readily available thing?? Easy fit??

Actually nervous about getting it an mot but really want it on the road to rub my brothers face in it....

That and might give him a run for his money in his daily Meriva VXR.....

So got my g insured this morning a mere £180 and few cans of fuel to get to the mot today and well it failed. Impressively only on brakes tho not bad after sitting for ten years....

Osr brake not working at all. Easy fix.
Brake lines rotten essayist fix
Brake bias way out, fixed by working brakes lol
Brake compensator valve leaking.

On the way to the garage I was listening to every cough and splutter she did preying it made it... my little g did.... as I was leaving mate had to bring a brand new gtr into the shop.... ooft awesome so spurred on by that and my slightly disappointed fail I gave her skippy out the BMW dealership into second and lit the tires over the bridge (was damp) on remembering I was opposite the police station I behaved... calmly driving it home without issue....

Now gotta find the parts and cash I need for a retest

it varies the brake juice pressure to the rear cylinders according to the load on the rear suspension - the lower the back end, the more pressure is allowed through. Pretty easy to fit, no idea about availability.

Right update.... brakes fixed and the car will be going for its mot this week.. which this time it will pass as the tester is fixing it so he's making sure she's ready... obviously then she's going to be on the road (yessss) what I wanna ask is what fuel do you guys all run?????

I've got a Tesco Morrison's bp shell within maybe mile of the house.. just wanna know what's the most common runner

I ran mine on supermarket boggo when I was studying. I only really noticed the difference when I started on the V-power, now i dont run anything else.

I wont touch the supermarket stuff. But down to what you can afford, needs a minimum of 96 and as Jacque says 98 is better

So after popping an oil seal a few months back I've got it rebuilt and ready to go....

Then tonight went to put it back in and complete blank can't remember how it goes in... thought I took photos on my phone but that's in the bin with everything lost.... has anyone got a step through of pics or even a good pic I can work off....

Cheers

As you look at the engine bay, it's on the right of the engine, next to the distributor. There's a blue one and a black one (the colour of the sensor, not the plug connecting it).

Thanks but had got it before I seen your reply.... have her running again and all seems ok apart from the exhaust rattling so hopefully some new rubber and all will be grand... big thanks to Pete for the parts and telephone advise.... always helpful as I'm a complete novice..... few wee bits together sorted on her but at least she's running.... the hopefully by the winter ill of saved enough ££££ for the bodywork and respray..

Still in need of a standard set of belts, complete if anyone can help... a mk2f I think it is... K plate....

Also local shop to me did a cracking price on a 1000 beltif anyone struggling to find one..

Right guys,

I'm really struggling and need someone to help me out.

After getting the polo running again I've hit a brick wall and can't get round it....

So start the car, runs fine, touch the throttle and it just stutters and dies.... or sometimes it will rev up and then just drop right out...

I'm completely stumped and want her back on the road.. someone please...

Have you followed the diagnostic guide? If you can confirm its none of those then may be easier to work out the problem

I’ve still not got any further with it. My mate who got it on the road said something about throttle control sensor or something like that but he’s too busy to come to the house for a look and I can’t get it to him....

Another person told me could be the tb......

Anybody......

I’m that fed up I’m considering cutting my loss and selling it as it’s wasted sitting in the drive

After it dies does it start up again easily or is it struggling?

I had a similar issue this spring having not run mine for a few months, it turned out to just be the battery after having gone through most of the diagnostic guide on this site and messed about with everything else I could think of, I thought the voltage was decent at around 13v at idle but it was dying out and then it eventually didn't have enough kick to even turn over when warm. I didn't even suspect the battery at first because it would start up straight away from cold.

I bought a new bosch battery and it has been fine after that, these cars seem to be very sensitive to voltage drop so make sure you are getting over 14v across the battery at idle and rule that out first.

To be honest with you I’ve never been back at her... extending my garage at the mobent and soon as it’s done the car will be put in the garage so I can start on a full restoration including body refurb and respray... has lots the love when she wouldn’t go but in this weather makes me want to get it show ready

Given current economic conditions I’ve been getting the garage cleaned up and thinking about getting the polo into the garage... connected the jump leads and it started up straight away... ran a couple of minutes and seemed to be ok.. then it stopped.... I’m wondering the earth lead from the charger to the chassis seems to have a few strands that’s pulled out the end clip is that enough to upset everything???
