After riding out in Yoof's Polo at Bylton and doing a track day last year at Oulton in the Polo I have decide to strip the Polo out to fit some bucket seats and harnesses. A full PPP roll cage will be going in at a later date.
Pictures will do the talking:
Start of strip.

Got bored of the stripping so I fitted my new Ally rad and new braided turbo oil drain.

Some homemade door cards.

Setting up the position of the seats.

Seat frames tacked in.

Seats trial fitted.

Once happy the frames where then properly welded in. Got a guy from work to weld the drivers side in and gave me a quick lesson in welding so I did the passenger side.
Sorted out the harness mounts.
Next stage was to spray the mounts black and then to put the carpet back.

Trimmed some carpet for the rear bench, still got a few bits to tidy up and some bits need cutting for the rear turrets, will be doing that next week sometime.
If you're tracking it I'd get those harnesses mounted properly (on a strut brace or roll cage) or you'll do yourself an injury if you crash, with them being that low down. Looks good otherwise though!
Looks like the Alex's are giving Robin safety lessons, lol. I just posted about the same on FB. Yoof had a decent bar that could be welded in, before they talked me into the cage....bad boys.
Thanks for the comments and advice guys. Never really thought about the danger in having the harnesses mounted low down.

The angle is probably within FIA spec to be fair:

Robin- have you used spreader plates under the floor for the rear mounts behind the seat?
Yeah i got these fitted Yoof
http://www.rallydesign.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=66_72&products_id=306
I think 45 degrees is the max but the 10 degrees is preferred. The bar between the struts at the back is perfect.
Awesome job Robin, rad looks nice too is that one that you were on about in the other thread?
Looks like some good work Robin, glad you're keeping tidy inside rather than fully stripped ... functional and fun! looks good!

What about a good selection of hammers?
Car looks good though Robin. You've not left much room for tall passengers!!! ;)
Lol @ hammers!
Not much room due to me being a short arse!
Too right, build it for the driver.
I assume your going to get your sunroof welded up if you get a PPP cage robin?
Yeah if that's what has got to be done but I'd like to keep it if I can.
I've always wondered wether you can keep it tbh, although its an easy entrance for a leak

I wonder how much weight it adds to the car?
Depends how many bars you have :) I worked mine out to be 45kg I think, but have full rear X, both doors X, and through to the turret, with a floor bar, windscreen bar, and horizontal support bars too. Given my driving I'm glad...
Sunroof- can go or stay, a good cage should use a windscreen bar, which means you can't operate the sunroof, so it's kinda pointless.
I'd not want a full cage without this bar to be honest, and most trackdays don't like you having sunroof/windows open so your arms don't fall out (which naturally they do on the road...)
I thought that they generally weigh less (slightly) than the shit that you take out if you include the transition from factory recliners to buckets.
Deffo- especially if you remove sound deadening material and rear bench etc etc.
Even the spare wheel, jack and toolkit must be 18kg?

I guess you can extend the sunroof lever so you can still use it, i'd like to keep mine in tact as i am wanting to use the car on the road once in a while.
At least, the seats have got to be the biggest saving, especially on mine, from full leather Corrado seats to fixed buckets...

Front seats are about 25kg's each.
Rear bench is 20kg.
Other bits and bobs probably comes to 15kgs.
Good saving when you think how much different the car feels when a passenger gets in one.

Alex, let me know if you want rid of the leather Corrado seats! ;)
when my safety devices cage was delivered to me I remember the courier label said 40kgs on it, not sure how accurate that was mind.

I think you'll need to ask someone else for those bad boys mate. I sold em a while back with the rest of the interior.
Pretty much all done now.
Picked up a rear strut brace from Yoof yesterday and welded it in and also bolted it in as well just to be safe.
Finished the carpet as well, don't look great close up as i wasn't able to do it in one piece due to the shape so its all made up with smaller bits. Looks ok from afar, will do for the time being as it will all need to come out when the cage goes in.

Only got a couple of things to do (new front top mounts and underseal) and it will be ready for Oulton next month.
Looks good that robin, I bet carpeting them was a right pain in the arse!
Like you wouldn't believe , looks easy but it's bloody hard to get it to look nice, in the end I gave up and ignored how it looks!
You can tell...
If you're following in Yoof's footsteps, are you going to wait 'til there's a cage in it before stacking it at Oulton?

Lol
We shall see what happens at oulton, won't need a roll cage for some bumper action..........oh coolant boy.........
It's looking good Robin. The carpet is a bitch isn't it!
Just driven the G for the first time since i have done all the work, did about 30miles and i have now got EPIC back ache, seats are really comfy and i love the driving position but you feel every single bump!
Time to spunk some money on a trailer!
Just found this among the pics on my old PC:
Got quite a few of it actually - some of Matt stripping the car, a few more of it looking like this.
Don't know if it's something you have, or want?
oooo yes please ;D
Finishing touch done today - black Alcantara trimmed steering wheel with grey stitching.

tracey is quite good at stitching!
Ready for oulton now ;D

Where did you get your wheel done?
Friend at work.
It's awesome! I wouldn't mind getting mine done, was it a mates only job or does he offer it as a service?
He does offer the service however he will not do Alcantara again as its too time consuming due to the lack of stretch it gives and it also tears easily.
Did you make your own rear door cards or just carpet over the inner quarter panel ??
I used some perspex to create a flat surface and then carpetted over it.
Looks good, i always think standard rear door carss look abit odd in a stripped out onterior as therr ebds dont line up with anything, did you just screw the perspex back to the inner quater panel??
Quick update:
Fitted a roll cage to the car, picked up a safety devices one from a member on here for a very good price.
Had to cut the cage down to get it to fit as mine has a sunroof and i didn't want to cut it out.
The side bars are way too low so the plan is to have some bars welded in higher at a later date.

Got the cage and the welding done for less than £400 so pretty pleased with it.
Going to do Oulton Park near the end of June.
Looking good mate. Be careful of the clearance between your head and the joints/bolts on the cage where the bar over the door meets the B pillar roll over bar. A friend of mine went out in a car with a bolt-in cage similar to yours and wasnt wearing a helmet, needless to say he did himself no end of damage when the car had a small bump...
Looks great that robin awesome job! gettin proper track spec now!

you've obviously never met robin, and he's not shown the blocks of wood bolted to the pedals mod in this build thread, or the cushion on the bucket seats to see over the steering wheel - suffice to say he's about 4ft6.
When stood on a phone book...
Once you've sorted the door bars and windscreen bar it won't be that bad tbh! Did the blot in bar to the floor fit okay?
Well done, looks very nice good job :)
That looks really good.. :)
Are you able to pass on the details to me of the guy that did your steering wheel? would like to see if I could have mine covered..
Mark
I think his mrs did the steering wheel Mark :)
A guy at work did the steering wheel for me. PM me if you want one of yours doing.
It's been a while since I have updated this thread so here goes:
Did a track day at Oulton in November and found boost issues - boost was dropping down to 17psi (actuator pretty much set to the max and no boost leaks). Replaced the turbo and boost was back up to 21psi.
Put the car on the rollers in Feb and made 205bhp.
Following that I then did a track day at Oulton Park in March and had some great tussles with cars with much more power.
Videos and pictures here: http://www.polog40.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=9551.0
The day ended just after lunch when I stripped 5th gear.

Over the next 2-3 weeks I will be taking the engine out to fit a replacement box with the gripper diff fitted, sorting a few small oil and coolant leaks out, fitting some PPP adjustable TCA's and these FK coilovers with custom springs (300lb/in on the front and 200lb/in on the rear).
The aim is to have it all done ready for some Santa Pod action on the 10th of August - time to dig out the drag slicks :-)
Next track on the plan is in November at Oulton Park again unless I can find some time to do one earlier as I would really like to see what difference the coilovers have on the handling of the car.
Congrats on the power figure Robin, rear coils are a bit of an arse if they are off a mk1 golf? Should be ok as you've removed the helpers but will have to run them pretty jacked up.

Fitted the rear coilovers without much issue, the car is set at a 40mm ish drop and the platforms are in the middle of the thread travel.

It's nice from a far but far from nice........
Thats my old cage or one of the 3 i had made a few years back :)
Mine had a sunroof too but i removed it and the cage then fits perfect really well made for a bolt in cage was a very tight fit.
Looking good!
I bought the cage from a guy called josh in stoke a while back so not sure where it originally came from.
As mentioned I couldn't be bothered to remove the sunroof so cut the cage down to fit - its a bit of a tight squeeze in the car now lol.
Coming along very nicely, I like the clubsport interior thats going on.
Not done a massive amount to the Polo since the last update apart from fitting lexan polycarbonate windows and carrying out some pikey weight saving on the front end - laminated photos of the headlights stuck onto some aluminium plates.

haha the lights are class, have you had the car weighed recently with any sort of figures.
Haha thats great robin! Not played with any gear boxes recently?
I did weigh the car before removing the headlights and the lexan windows and it was bang on 800kg with half a tank of fuel.
Not killed another gearbox yet however I have wound the boost down from 21psi to 18psi just to give the gearbox an easier life.
