hello hello,
following the success of the G40 Peaks Rally and stand at VWNW we are on about a rolling road day at Aldon Automotive. This is in Brierley Hill in the West Midlands. http://www.aldonauto.co.uk/shop/
We are suggesting a saturday in November as its before the xmas rush and after the show season when people might have a lull.
Why Aldon? -
Location
Its quite central in the UK - people from North/South/East/West can get there quite easily. The car park can hold plenty of cars for people running or just turning up to watch! There's also a sandwich van that comes round and shops etc nearby for food.
Facilities
People moan about rolling roads giving false readings, operators not respecting your car etc etc. The road at aldon in my experience, and many other members, reads realistic with standard 100bhp 16v polos coming out at 101bhp etc and standard g40s coming out around 120bhp etc. They will rev it to what you want, will re-run for a small cost if you found out there was a problem with your car (split boost hose etc) and are generally very accomodating.
We need 15-20 cars to have the road for the day and it should be £20-25 per power run. The club will pay a deposit to book once the number look good. However if people don't turn up etc. then we lose it (sorry to be negative, but that's the way things are!)
So - anyone interested??
1. Pete Mirfin, Standard G40 - setting the baseline figure!
I'll go and I'll run if you give me a hand to put my decat pipe on Pete! ;-) I always enjoy the RR days, nice and chilled and a good oppurtunity to chat. I vote for a day in October too, say the 11th?!

I will probably do my usual thing, turn up but not in my polo and instigate a piss-up.
Must pull my finger out of my arse and get to this one.
I'm at a stag do the weekend of the 7th, so will be there in the torque monster if other than that.
November is Birthday season for me, so it could make a nice day out birthday present for me. Not been on a rolling road day before, is there much oportunity to make adjustments while on the rollers, ie how much time is alocated to your slot, and how many runs do you have?
if you want to discuss cam timing I just started this thread
http://www.polog40.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=526
It's not really a tune-up session, just a power run so you don't get time to tinker with things much if at all. Each car is probably only on for about 5 minutes. Aldon are pretty good though, if there is something going wrong they'll quite often let you tinker and then do another run later on. But really it's not like a rolling road session where you go in to set everything up properly, it's just to see what power you are making.
yeah the rr day is power runs not a adjustment/tuning session - hence the £20 a run - they are more than 5 mins - getting it in, strapped down, run about 3 times to work out the drag of the gearbox etc. then a proper max power run. Its always good for the craic too, chatting in the car park/meeting to trade parts and sometimes even a few beers/stop over in the evening!!!
yeah I guess including time getting the car in, strapping down and what not... it's more than 5 mins.

you can count me in ,no idea what its running
I'm fairly certain the Polo will be in bits for most of October now - joy of joys - got some new stuff coming then so it's going to be a busy month. If it's in one piece I'll run it and expect massive transmission losses, but otherwise I'll probably rock up in the Puss-hat and chat to people, unless it's on the 25th in which case I'll be at the Toyota Sprint Series in Middlesbrough.
I'll run the yellow 1.6 to make up the numbers at the end of the day if necessary
(cue moans about being N/A)
haha doesn't bother me steve, I want to see it make 120lb/ft again :)
Any updates on this yet Pete? or are we just waiting for numbers still?
will post on club pooo to see if any more numbers
haha, was that a bit of a freudian slip?
I wrote 'hobbies' the other day and I swear the filter changed it to boobies. There is no way I could typo that wrong. I had to go back and edit it
to be honest, if we do have one in november - well what would people think about waiting till jan and club polo one... mixing it up there?
but then it's just a club polo one :( surely we can scare up 20 cars? including some from club polo I guess, priority given to g40s?
the amount of people who went to cp's last year was immense, i couldn't be bothered with it in the end. nice to have a G40 specific one but if we cant make the numbers up then what else can we do. THe amount of people on this forum now, surely we can make up the numbers though
I can't commit to anything until I know a date. I can't see the Polo making amazing power but I'll happily run it. I think it's got a vacuum leak.
Just re-read the thread and noticed it's November not October. I can't see myself being busy unless it's the first weekend (Dad's birthday), so yeah put me down and I'll come along. If push comes to shove I guess I can run the Passat. :D
lets make a date and take it from there really
im sure we can muster enough g40s up, after viewing that magazine feature pictures, i really would like to kind of reinact that, would be good fun :D

I'll be there, and I'll run if there's space and the car's running ok, but there's no point putting myself on the list until I know. Should be ok though, and it could do with the motorway run!

Is there any spaces left on this? Would'nt mind finding out what mines kicking out standard.
I take it there'd be no problem bringing a mk2 classic? Would'nt wanna screw up ya photo line-up by sticking a mk2 in the middle of you all :D
bring whatever car you want!
there will be a minimum of 20 cars allowed to run. Once 20 have run, if there is time then more can run, but it just depends how quickly we get through the first 20.
Theres a small chance I might be able to attend this, but I can't guarantee anything.
Hopefully I will be there with the Bluester see what he's doing but only going if there is a night out :)
This clashes with an annual works do. Technically I guess I could come up for the morning but I'd be kind of missing the point.
come on alex - thrash to the midlands then see what your car can do... can;t you make a story about this?!?!?

It'll make for a long day! I'll have to do P'boro to Cardiff on Friday, then Cardiff to Birmingham and back on Saturday before going out in the evening and going home to P'boro on Sunday. I'd love to go but it's a bit of a non starter.
im putting the g on the rollers and attending the piss up.
pedo panda is coming down in the g aswell.
im defo attending the rr day, not sure about the night out after, but who knows. ;D
sorry pete. Just keeping my fingers crossed i have some money left then. Off to see Mighty boosh next saturday!!!
I will have to put my self down as a no as I can't be sure where I will be.
Wouldn't be in the G40 either way :(
I'm wondering whether I should be doing this now or not, I'm a bit scared she'll break and I don't want that after the k's I've just spent on her over the last week and I'm only picking her up from Jabba tomorrow morning :-\
you should still bring it! Perfect time to see if you're making the power you expect. No point in doing it all if you're going to be too scared to drive it in case it breaks. ;)
c'mon guys, we need some commitment here. You wanted us to book events, we have done, now you have to turn up or else we are wasting our time. It's the members (i.e. you guys) who can make or break the g40 scene (god I hate that word but I can't think of anything better) work.
I didn't know there was a G40 scene :D
Chris, are you coming to this?
I am gonna come, I told Pete I am 100% and I stand by my word... I'm just scared and not looking forward to hearing my baby scream, I don't think I'm gonna be able to watch :'(
it is a bit nervy, but they do treat it with sympathy (unlike some rolling roads) and you do see how strong it is!
It's all good fun and I do wanna know what she's rolling, I'll just be hating it :D
yeah we've been at aldon for a few years both with club g40 and club polo and they are very careful with the cars. Plus they know how to drive g40s now, I remember the first time we went there the young lad kept stalling them, then the year after we commented to him that he wasn't stalling them anymore and he said "yeah I'm used to them now".
They're a good set of lads.
In terms of being scared about them revving the car, it's really no worse than putting your foot down on a motorway slip road and booting it up to about 100. They will rev it to whatever you ask them to rev it to. So if you're not happy going right up (or even beyond!) the red-line then they wont do it.
I've got to get my tracking done first so not been able to 100% commit to going on the rollers until i've got that done, away with work for a few days so hoping i can get it done next thursday friday, should be ok though.
i just like the atmosphere really, i have never put my car on, i am far too scared to, but this time i will be so i can sit cowering in the corner with you dirrt lol
its all in all good fun, and if all else fails we can just listen to petes storys, he has so many, he really is like my grandad
I'm pretty scared of putting mine to to be honest although he has been on there before its still worrying, especially as i've done pretty much everything myself but never mind i have RAC cover ;)
although im never one of the people that stand at the engine end just in case.... lol.
i aint even gunna drive mine on, im gunna get gramps to do it for me
im just gunna watch from the petrol station lol
Rolling roads don't put any more strain on your car as a whole than booting it down the road (infact a fair amount less).
As said Aldon chaps are very good, listen to you first and then run the car, also will be able to tell you what you've run previous years. All being well my car will be there, although I've got a long weekend ahead of me!
I'll be down on the Satarday to put my g on the rollers, but probly not staying for the lash up.
I'll be there on Saturday to run the G, hopefully it won't shit itself on the dyno!
Well i have the chager rebuilt now, have a week to do around 350 miles before ill put it on the rollers though, thinking road trip somewhere ;D. Either way i will be there regardless come rain or shine.
Oh an whos was the G40 at Jabbasport this weekend then?
I got a charger rebuilt by PSD a few years ago, slapped it on the car, drove 85 miles to brum and whacked it straight on the rollers. Charger was fine!

That was mine!
Now R1 fresh baby :-* and £1036.23 down, eek! :-\ was worth it though, I love my baby and she deserves it! I've done 350 miles in here since Saturday haha :)
Brian said a guy had come in and recognised my G, that be you then?
So who's is the G40 in at Jabba with a fucked 5th gear with only 58K on the clock?
You lucky it was stolen :P

I am shitting it, but it's gotta be done :D
Brian reckons I should be able to see 160 and he's gonna try and come along if he can on Saturday, though he is really busy
I'm trying to get my custom exhaust on her by Saturday, as that is the only thing that is gonna restrict her
Yeh that would be me ;D, just picking up the charger an noticed it on the ramp, thought i had seen it before. BVH Brain tells me??
Nice price tag there, what else did you have done then?
Jabbasports my neck of the woods. Should let me know when any of you guys are down and i'll put the kettle on! (might even make the bacon butties!)
Is the place easy to find by the postcode? Gonna be using satnav to get there!
Gonna check mine over this week and hope it behaves itself on the way/on rollers/on way home again!
should be when you get to brierley hill- or ring me, can guide you in!
nice one cheers pete. I'll get your number from the night out thread, just incase!

Hellooo! :D
BVH? You'll have to blonde translate that one for me, that's new to me I think :-[
Well I had the R1, induction kit, upgraded disc and pads, he sorted out my brake nipple for me as one was fucked and bled them again - I now have normal brakes, thats nice!
I've spent 3K on my car in the past 2 weeks I realised yesterday, that's love that is :-*

Yeah tomtom was accurate enough, accept it takes you down the road opposite to where they actually are
BVH is a Big Vavle head, is basically allowing the engine to breathe better by introducing bigger intake and exhaust valves. (someone correct me if im wrong)
What discs and pads did they sell you? im looking at replacing all mine in the next month.
3K a fair bit of money to spend but not surprising really, i think most of us here will have spent around that possibily a lot more. But your right it's all about the love :-)
I'll definately be down on saturday! I'm not too bothered about a power run but i'll happily put it on if you need to make numbers up! :o
more the merrier!! we'll also be asking people for spec sheets and photos to do a write up for the site - if thats ok!

See, if you'd have said big valve head then I would have known what you were going on about :-[ haha :D and yes she is! It was done by a previous owner that looked after her very well, about 5 years ago!
Mintex plain faced discs and pads
My bloke and his clever friend are building me a custom exhaust right now from the manifold, I was watching yesterday afternoon and it looks mint! So well done!
Roll on Saturday ;D
Right in case I don't get a chance to say have a good day,
"HAVE A GOOD DAY (AND NIGHT)"
I'm gutted I can't make it for this event, cos would have loved to have got some figures, and of course meet a few more of the G40'ers out there. Anyway, I'll be getting rather pissed in a wedding, so looking forward to reading results and reports next week.
Hello guys i am still goin on saturday if it makes it any better for any body i will go on first and get it over and done with cu saturday
that's work finished for the week for me! Off to yoof's tomorrow to help make his car blow up go faster
What time is everyone planning to be there tomorrow?
Early o'clock?
I'll be there from about 9ish
I don't think I'm going to make it, can't get Blueys tracking done in time plus not been very well and got to have blood tests and crap like that so think i'd best give it a miss unfortunately :-(
Tidy, see you then.
I'll be 1 wheelbolt short but i'll be there at some point. depends when the other half gets out of bed!
Anyone got a spare plastic trim rivet they dont want? i only need 1
ahh wish id known about this b4,im a newbie to the g40,i booked a weekend at center parks otherwise id be down to see this, maybe next year, have a good rollin road day guys. :'(
im all excited!
not had time to get my car looking nice, so it iwll have to do how it is!
now i think i may be going as my other half wants to go to cambridge to hopefully buy a 306, i really don't see the attraction myself but i think seeing as i'm being dragged out of bed and up there to look at something i'm really not interested in i might as well just come up for the afternoon and piss up as compensation :-)
can't run bluey as the trackings not done but be good to see everyone anyway i just need to take it a bit easy and not make myself more ill! lol.
Well all cleaned and polished today (probably be ditched by the time i get there though) so see you around 9 guys & girls
mines clean but not polished. probably get dirty on the drive over anyway!
"why can't I go back to how I used to be?"
"what, a virgin?" lmao
Quote of the week!
Nice to meet all you guys. Had a good laugh today and given me lots to think about. Got to improve on the 137bhp for next time.

didnt realise you got 137bhp, so did i.
hope ypu got back ok, i couldnt see anything on the way home with all the spray. :-)
i applaud you for the quote. Had us in stitches! Yup, 137bhp at the flywheel. I'm happy with that(for now!)
I actually wrote that to the forum sat in the pub so i didnt forget!
The drive home was bloody terrible. visibility on the M6 was poo. Traction in places was an issue too! no rain over here tho so the roads were dr enough to put all those horses to use! some guy in a 3.0 TDI audi tried to leave me! He flashed me past when he realised i was sticking to his rear bumper!

didnt have an issue with traction, my car was a hoot, could finally go in to the boost it is so much better, smoother and faster. smiles all round. full service next sat some EBC grooved and driiled dics and red stuff pads aswell. sorted.
he pulled onto a dual carriageway and put his foot down upto 100ish and then tried again after the next roundabout when it turned back into a normal road. Hit is indicators when he realised i was still sat there to let me past but i couldnt be bothered. Managed to use £30 fuel today so i must have a fuelling problem?
Got the wheels spinning up on a couple of roundabouts and in slow traffic on the M6!!! my pads are abit low so looking at some mintex disks and pads.

thats about right for a G ;D
shame I didn't make it. Cars going to get mapped and caged over the winter so hopefully be ready for show season
£30 for just over 200miles i should say. I was doing a constant 80 on the motorway though. Gonna stick the G60 greens in when i find the chip to go with them! Think its been lost forever :'(
I put £31 in bluey and did 340 odd miles before i needed more, then had to put another £30 in to get home and now on about half a tank, really annoying having the smaller tank lol.
shitty drive home today and a shame i missed the rollers but was a good day and night out never the less, although we do need more people on the night out!
oh and if anyone gets any EBC stickers can they save them for me please?
ta
