Steering play
« on: February 25, 2012, 06:32:32 pm »
I have noticed over the last 2 weeks that there is a like a knocking noise when turning the steering wheel. When parking its more of a clunk. When i stopped today and then moved the wheel from right to left, as i got past the centre point it was like the steering went loose then tight. It had about 20mm of play. Could this be a new steering rack?

I checked the steering pole from the wheel and that was good, and then made the cluck and it felt like it was coming further down the pole.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Check all your suspension bolts, bushes and mounts including any on a subframe is where I'd start :)

is there play in the rack? hold the bit in the middle (which holds both arms) and try to twist it, if it makes a clunk or the there is a lot of movement- you need to adjust the rack as per the haynes manual. (10mm nut on rack)

Thats sound like the problem to me. Shouldn't be anything like bolts on subframe and that has they were checked after this happened.

Will check it out.

I had the same problem

tightened up the bolt at the pedal box and it solved the problem.
