Rear Drums adjustment
« on: June 18, 2013, 05:23:25 pm »
Hi, My rear drums are never fully working, i adjust them and have replaced the cables but the last two year they needed adjusting for MOT and feel like they are never fully working, especially the handbreak.

What is the correct way to adjust them,

Also are there different types of cables - maybe i have got longer cables or cheap rubbish

Any help would be much appreciated, as MOT time is soon and i know it will need doing.

Haynes states

1 To check the handbrake adjustment, first
apply the footbrake firmly several times to
establish correct shoe-to-drum clearance,
then apply and release the handbrake several
times.
2 Applying normal moderate pressure, pull
the handbrake lever to the fully-applied
position, counting the number of clicks on the
handbrake ratchet mechanism. If adjustment
is correct, there should be approximately 4 to
7 clicks before the handbrake is fully applied.
If this is not the case, adjust as follows.
3 Remove the plastic cover from the
handbrake lever (see illustration).
4 Chock the front wheels, then jack. up the
rear of the vehicle and support it on axle
stands (see “Jacking and vehicle support”).
5 With the handbrake set on the 4th notch of
the ratchet mechanism, rotate the adjusting
nut until it is difficult to turn both rear wheels
by hand (see illustration). Once this is so,
release the handbrake lever, and check that
the wheels rotate freely. Check the
adjustment by applying the handbrake fully,
counting the clicks from the handbrake
ratchet and, if necessary, re-adjust.
6 Where necessary refit the centre console
section, then lower the car to the ground.

I had this problem with the last couple MOT's aswell. so this year i just bought new drums and shoes. and it only has one click at the handbrake now to hold on a steep hill.

the way i adjust them is losen the nut under the handbrake lever to free off the cables, take your drum off, grind away any lip in the edge of the drum (but if big lip change the drums)
adjust the wedge down to expand the shoes and your drum should be a tight fit to go back on but make sure it still spins freely. do this to both sides then tighten up the nut under the handbrake lever again and that should be it.

they are pretty crap.  If you are unable to fully adjust them then you probably need new shoes and possibly drums too.

Taking the mechanism apart, cleaning it, greasing it up and putting it back together might help too.

If it makes you feel any better, the handbrake system on my volvo (which have combination discs with drums inside) is even worse, it's not even adjustable, I fit some parts from an older 850 to even pass an MOT.
