Slimline vs stock fanshroud and 2 speed fan.
« on: May 20, 2013, 10:04:23 pm »
On my mk2 G40 converted bready, I have a little problem with that it gets a little too hot!
Got a slimline fan at the moment! Thermostat is "motorsport" spec that opens at 70 degrees! But at a trackday today, the engine watertemp was around 95 after 3 laps, so took it easy and drove back in the depot?

It got smaller chargerwheel, ported, chip, Cosworth 2wd Intercooler in lower part of front apron with airvent holes!

I have been thinking of putting in a stock fanshroud and 2 speed fan! But will that be better than the slimline?
And how Important is the slimline fan placement on the radiator? Mine is now in the middle

Anyone got some inputs on this?

95°c is nothing to worry about!

At higher speed the fan does nothing in comparison to the natural airflow across the radiator, the fan's purpose is to create enough airflow at low speeds to stop the car overheating - at higher speeds you'd ideally remove it!

Also is the thermostat any good? I'm very skeptical of 'motorsport' thermostats in general, unless you can be sure they flow the same as an OEM part then I'd avoid.

I changed the thermostat a few weeks ago! Bought it from Bar-tek!
Had some problems last year, but didnt change until now! When I open the housing, there was no thermostat at all! No wonder it was colder than my aircooled VW 1600 Variant, when i drove the polo last autumn... ;)

Is this kit! http://www.bar-tek-tuning.com/lshop,showdetail,22852,en,1369088506-22870,1138132527.1138132721,2260004,72,Tshowrub--1138132527.1138132721,.htm

what is the condition of the radiator?  If it's very old then buying a new one would be a good idea as it's likely to be silted up.

As Andy said, the fan isn't really doing anything when the car is moving at much more than 20mph except getting in the way of airflow so I doubt the problem (if there is any) is that.

You'll regularly see 95deg on a track day,  it's if it gets over 100 then it's getting a bit much.

just bought a custom alloy rad of phil j, was only £150. pretty good, not the most athesticly pleasing welds, but for the money, beats paying £500 odd for a custom one from a company
Dont know if he has anymore in stock, waiting time is long though
