GT diagnostics. Trouble connecting to ecu.

I have been trying to connect my gt to VWTool or Vag com 311.2 with a cheap usb obd2 cable and have had no luck connecting at all.
I have checked the port settings so Vag Com and VW tool both recognise the adapter/port but will not connect to the ecu.
Do the advanced settings need to be changed on the serial port? Could somebody recommend a cable that is know to work?

Have you tried the cable in another mk3 polo?  My cable works fine with my 1993 engine, but I tried it in a couple of H registered polos with no joy.
