Condition of G lader
« on: May 21, 2013, 11:39:24 pm »
I recently bought a second hand g lader, it was ported from rpm tuning and it has a 65mm pulley fitted. It has 5000 miles since the last rebuild. But, it has a few problems:
-It has a poped oil seal (the one that you can see when you unbolt the elbow)

I opened the charger to replace the seal and inspect it and i saw a few other problems:
-The displacer has marks that something foreign object has injured it.
-Also, the wall of the grooves is to thin in some points of the displacer.

One more question.
The displacer (both sides) does not have the expander springs beneath the apex seal? Am i right,  because mine doesn't have ;D

Thank you

There isnt any metal spring strips on the scroll under the apex seals
The bit where the apex seal sits does look pretty thin, mine is the same on one of my chargers, wear in the scroll bearing causes excessive play and the scroll and wears against the casings
might be worth sending the pics to pete g40 hes the charger guru

First of all, thank you for your reply guys.

So, you in your opinion should i try rebuilding the charger, or it will explode?
What about the marks in the displacer? I will smooth it with a thin sand paper, should it be ok?

the marks will probably be ok without smoothing them out.  However the displacer MAY be ok, but who knows IF or WHEN the thin peice of apex seal wall may break.

Safer would be to cut 5-10mm off the apex seal and fill the scroll with chemical metal - tho this may not balance that well, i have seen it done.

Haha, i did indeed listen mate :P
personally, if it was my charger, i wouldnt risk it, if the thin part broke loose it could potentially damage other parts
i would try and source another scroll with similiar wear pattern to yours, though they can be pricey
but thats me, other people might be different, as pete said it may break it may be fine for another 5 years, just up to you if you want to run that risk

Thank you Taylor

Peter, if i cut the apex a bit as you said, and i fill it with chemical metal, isn't the  charger going to have a drop of pressure?

Slight drop yes. But I bet you would hardly notice
U might want to think of another lader at some point in the future.

The charger that my car runs now, is in mint condition, but it needs rebuild.
I bought it due to it low price+ it was ported.
I will have a try.
What i had what i lost... ;D

i can confirm;

my charger had the same problem: the end of one apex seal was badly worn out due to it was out of balance.

a belgian "G lader guru" welded (or dont really know how) some special metal on it (Magnesium?)

after that we shortend the apex seal a bit so i would fit and i m still running after +10K miles.

i have no gauge, we only mesured once, (hose through hood into the car and someone holding the gauge  )  it was 0.65 bar still on the damaged charger, after that a friend did rebuild of the charger, saw the damage & had it fixed by this specialist.  notice that at that point i had a lot of slip on the chargerbellts from 5000+ rpm, so cant really tell.  the charger is not ported & on a 68mm pulley

the charger fellt pretty much the same after the rebuild, maybe it gave a little more but was hard to tell. i guess due to the slip. once i had the slip fixed, it had a bit more power, specially at higher rpm  so i m guessing 0.7 - 0.75 at 6000+ but that's just a guess ofcourse.

i know its a guy living near Ghent (Belgium)  don't know him personally, Peter de Groot is his name.

i cant find any contactinfo at this moment. on belgian forums the rumour goes he was thinking about stopping he's activitys..  (2011 posts..) he goes as a hard to find man that does not likes that much attention.

many people seem to be looking for him...  :P my friend knew him personally, will have to ask him..

perhaps http://www.ruud16v-g60.nl  heard a lot of positive on Ruud aswell, he's from holland.
