Suspension Problem...
« on: February 25, 2013, 12:50:55 pm »
Hi,

Recently o bought this suspension kit.

Bought because my old suspension where in a very bad shape and the right wheel were touching the arche.

Now with the new suspension the problem remains and both the front wheels (when i turn the car vigorously or turn and brake hard) are touching the top of the wheel-arches.

This suspension kit is supposed to lower the car (only) 40mm on the front and 30mm at the rear. When i was installing it, i noticed the springs where almost the same size the old ones and the rear suspension had 2 specs, witch of course i set to the lower one.
But the problem is on the front wheels, the front suspension didn't had adjustment, at least i din't notice nothing to adjust.

I have the stock 13'' BBS rims and tires with the stock measurements.

My question is "This could be blamed on any other component?".

Thanks in advance,
Claudio Vieira.

Sorry my ignorance, i didn't even know that "Bump Stops" even existed  ::).

I thought this suspension kit would not give any problems, because its only reduces 40mm, there are suspensions reducing 60mm.

I've consulted the Haynes Repair Manual for the polo 86c and Bump Stops are integral part of structure of the suspension. I don't remember if there were any when i saw the mechanic changing it.

After consulting the Web i saw outside the suspension structure Bump Stops fitted to various cars. Can i install outside the suspension Bump Stops on the G40?

you have to remove the suspension and dismantle to fit bump stops.

Are you absolutely sure the tyres are not 175 70 13 or 175 65 13?  or  175 60 14 on 14" rims?

First of all, i'm very thankful for your help PeteG40.

My tires are 175/60R13. Is the only tire measure that i can put legally in my country in this car. In the future i'm thinking to change to 185mm or 195mm - 14'' ou 15'' wheels, but its going to need an arche work for sure and 300€ to legalize it.

I've measured the height at the for wheels, from the ground to the fender. Front-right 560mm, Front-left 555mm, Rear-right 545mm, Rear-left 550mm. I'm sure this suspension kit it should be 550mm on all 4 wheels.

The previous owner had an accident in the Front-right of the car and i think that lifted somehow 10mm on the chassis structure on that corner. Leaving the other 3 corners distributing the Weight and messing with the height depending on the mass and wheel base of the car.

But the wheels touching the arches problem will be for sure the lack of the proper bump stops.

I'm going to see what i can do about it. When i'm alone in the car its rare to occur this problem but when i transport other passengers or weight it happens more often.
