Hi  I am  at present running on some after market  lowerd springs + shoks which although look good and handles ok gives a very firm and  harsh ride. so am looing to change them, see GSF do a kit for polos up to 1994 for around 65 pounds. wondering if anyone has any information or advice as to suitability or quality of this kit.

I think for £65 you'll find its just the springs mate! ;D
The ones GSF sell are made by Ventura IIRC. I've had a set of the -40mm Ventura's and found them to be absolutely fine on my MK2 with new O.E dampers. However, it was only an HZ 1043cc/45 bhp Polo as opposed to a G40.
TBH, you are better off getting a complete spring/damper kit. You can practically go down 60mm, any more and the suspension geometry will be wrong and you'll have problems with ground/arch clearance. The H&R kit is superb, or you could buy Koni adjustable dampers and Eibach springs.
It's a much talked about subject on here, have a search through this (chassis) section to find out more.
