the story of the G40 so far is that i bought her as a Spares or repair
non running polo, after getting her running briefly to discover a few faults,
needs a charger rebuild, which i hope to do myself, needed a new battery and some plugs,
apart from the charger the rest got done on day one and she ran a bit ropey but still ran,
we put my friends charger on as well to give her a bit of blast out and then removed that,

at that point i thought a good clean up was in order so i washed,
clay barred and polished the body while on a fault
finding mission, looking for body chassis and suspension faults,
the body work seems in good nick, the paint work is reasonably good
apart from the bonnet so eventually that will be getting a spray up,

Engine out
« Reply #2 on: August 18, 2012, 09:13:40 pm »
As the engine is filthy and the engine bay could do with a good clean out,
me and my mate decided doing the work i want to do to the bay
and engine,  can only really be achieved with the engine out,
so a couple of days ago we set to work one morning on the drive
fuelled by his knowlege and well my engineering skills and the odd can of monster
the g40 lump was out in a couple of hours,
gear box off, all vital fluids drained and sat in the garage,

So a few things i want to do to the engine are:
 de wedge the throttle body
GT inlet manifold
65mm toothed pulleys
exhaust system
charger rebuild and maybe porting
new sump seals and maybe new sump
cam belt
possibly a new cam
possible go for forged pistons funds permitting
head gasket

there are probably loads more i want to do engine wise that i will
get done as i have bits apart. the engine will be recieving a good lick of paint as
i want the whole engine bay and engine looking very fresh

last night i started by de wedging my throttle body as a nice simple
thing to ease myself in, i also received a gt inlet manifold this morning which was a nice suprise
as i was not expecting it till monday, so straight away steam clean
wash with some white spirit and a good spray job to freshen it up the results are below,
also did the top part of my throttle body too,

couple more photos, the boot lid got a mega polish  today to see how shiny and smooth i could get it,
auto glym clay bar did its magic, probably the best panel on the car, apart from the glue where the
previous number plate was stuck on, and the fact that someone touched up the red on the g40 badge with nail varnish, grr!!
the interior shot just to prove that the steering wheel is in fact stuck on the wrong side, the interior is not bad at all
the drivers seat is the only real let down as has some bolster wear,
also i think whoever the other owner was decided that the clocks in km were too much so edited the dials with a pen so i will be looking for a new speedo dial at some point
the other bad point on the interior was some halfords belt pads and steering wheel cover which got filed in the bin
as soon as i saw them,
i only plan on giving the interior a really good clean and remove the head unit
and replace it with some gauges, probably a steering wheel change for a momo team one as the steering wheel is
pretty shabby,

heres a few photos of the interior from todays mega clean up
and polish which i think smartens up the inside from how it looked
when i got her, i spent ages getting the body work in the boot
tidied up which was hard cos it had some shit soundproofing in there.

also there is a photo of the gear box which i have cleaned and given a spruce up as
well,

thought id update this as i havent in a while,
i have been cracking on with the polo in the last couple of months
i put the engine in after a couple of seal changes and a lick of paint to various
items, new boost pipes, stickers, header tank, and a good clean looking new and fresh again

Gave the charger a rebuild which i damaged a casing but thanks to pete i managed  to get another
one, all new bearings and seals, a new set of belts it was good as new again

also gave the car a bit of a handling upgrade over standard by a set of gladerseite blocks
powerflex bushes in each end or the tca's, and new top mounts brake disks and ebc pads
which was good seeing as all the bushes i took off were really sloppy,

after a good clean she is almost ready for mot, after a few running issues which was mainly mechanic error and bad diagnosis runs sweet as a nut, need a few cosmetics doing externally once the mot has been done,
