1.05 will never be quick or nippy, im afraid.
Cheapest option for bringing it up to pace would be buying a GT engine

In fairness, it's going to be a struggle to make any noticeable gains from small mods on that lump. If you were lucky and got, say, 10% from a free-flow exhaust & filter (what I would class as 'easy mods') it's still only 10% of 50bhp (or whatever it makes) so you're looking at a 5bhp gain. Un-noticeable to be frank in my opinion.

I might be wrong though, would be interested in what other folks think.

Personally, either do an engine swap - (even with an SPi 1.3 you will notice the difference straight away - as the Americans say, there's no substitute for cc) or instead or trying to make more power out of the lump, beef the brakes up instead so you can carry the speed you have for longer!

I wouldn't bother.  you'll end up spending a fortune and still have a slow car.  stick a GT engine in it!

you could fit a 1.6 from a mk4 polo but it's more work and it's no more powerful than a GT engine (both 75bhp) and not as tunable.  Most powerful engine you can bolt right in is a g40 engine.  then after that a mk4 16v engine although there's a fair bit more work involved to get that working

a g40, 1.3 still and more power to be had out a g40 than a 1.6 n/a

There has been 1400 abh engines (i think thats the code) out of the polo 1.4 sport /100bhp
but with a fair bit difficulty also.

where as a GT engine would just slot in perfect hassle free/ plus with light modifications it can reach 90Bhp~95bhp

for e.g G40 inlet replaces the GT one to bring down a little power, A high lift Camshaft (i used a piper BP300h cam with 280degree duration) A vernier pulley to adjust the cam
4 branch / de-cat and full stainless then finish it off with a Re-map from PPP

There has been several Gt's claimed to break the 100bhp but even with 90hp and only 780kgs (im sure the GT was lighter i could be wrong)
that in comparison to even 1.6 polo's etc the Gt copes very well..

Go on youtube and look for "1.0 g40"
It lasted 3 miles I think they said on the vid :D

I'd GT it personally. No idea how much they are nowadays, you could get conversions for about £300 a couple years back I think I gave my last GT conv. away. My brother had a couple of modded GT's, I remember one was ~96 BHP and was as quick as my mk2 Golf GTI 8v, sat at 115mph for ten mins or so 3 up without missing a beat too. Cracking little combo I think, the GT mk3
