Driving a G40 economically...
« on: April 10, 2012, 01:01:51 pm »
Was just wondering whats the best way to drive your G40 economically? It should be smiles/gallon but with the price of petrol, id rather get a good run than be stranded....

Is it the same as say, a modern diesel where its best to slow down using the gears etc?

Sorry if this has been asked before, did a search and it was just about how many mpg everyone was getting.....

Adrian

off boost, low revs.

Its more about anticipating changes in speed or light changes etc so you dont need to brake.

Are these that hard on fuel? I thought 40mpg could be achieved? If its mpg you are after buy a diesel for daily driving.

i think keeping a very moderate level of revs in my experience is best!

by moderate a mean do not labour the engine at 4th/5th gear @ 25/30mph

i think just under 3,000rpm seems to be a rev a like to acheive constant..

i think it more depends on your throttle position ... if your having you press the pedal down quite far then your using more fuel... slow accelerating is where it comes into play..

I usually find the best way is to do 2 things

1) Break down most of the time like me, that saves quite a lot in fuel purchasing ways
2) put your foot down in 1st then go straight to 5th  ;D

A remap would certainly help the economical side of things. But then you can go down the route of tyres pressures etc. I think i read in a vw manual that if you can skip gears thats good too and making the gear change quicker is good.

I do what pete says. Best i had was 350 miles to a tank. I go through most places at 30mph in 5th.

Apparently a petrol that achieves 40mpg is considered good.

I have a diesel for daily driving, was just wondering how to get the best mpg on the g40 when I don't feel like driving it hard, which is most of the time. Nobody said they were that hard on fuel....

I always thought drving at 40/45mph and barely accelerating to get to that speed would be economical djtez?

I try to stay in 5th most of the time and as long as I don't dip below 30mph, it doesnt seem to struggle...

A remap is definately on the cards in the next few months!

remove the supercharger and fit a turbo!  I get better economy from mine when doing motorway drives with 194bhp & a turbo than I did with 150bhp and a g-lader! . :)

Lol damn good advise there.

To be fair If it was economy then you wouldn't modify your car in performance wise...

I'm expecting 20mpg..
And can accept that

Ok mate I picked you up wrong. Does modifying these cars make them harder on fuel?
Just seeing you mention a remap. Is that like chipping them?

1. A won't be using the car long journeys or motorway driving
2. A drive like a full time c&ck

I average 24mpg in the seat Ibiza (abf) 165bhp

PeteG40's advice is sound; off boost, lift off early rather than brake and gentle acceleration.
Top speed 50mph. All this can give over 45mpg in a standard G as long as you're not driving in town. It also gives you a royal pain in the arse so get used to 30mpg and a lot more fun.

Lol...

That makes sense John? Pretty similar to the way I was driving appart from 50mph, but at least now I know I can do 50 rather than 40mph. Ill prob be expecting 25-30mpg then ha!

All I'll say is I'm very disappointed in my Ibiza Cupra diesel,. I average 37mpg in that on the motorway. The same style of driving sees about 40miles less per tank in the G40. Same capacity too.
