g40 piston ring sizes
« on: July 31, 2009, 04:38:03 am »
Hi all

Bought a g40 yesterday, drove it 40 miles from where I bought it, and the engine started to breathe like it was pressuring the crank case severely. Also a lot of oil out of the exhaust, so suspect head gasket and rings, has a bad misfire so one chamber is not giving combustion correctly.

My question is what size are the rings on a g40? The man whom I bought the car from is helping me with the issue by sourcing the required items for replacement.

The engine has been rebuilt (approx 2k miles ago) so I need to make sure the correct rings are bought.

(I have a feeling ill need to get the bores measured to check their tolerances for accepting new rings IF it had a hone at its recent rebuild)

Thanks very much.
Dan.

(I have no reason to doubt the rebuild as I have seen the photos which prove the engine was stripped down and rebuilt, just no receipts as the work was carried out by a gent who worked at a VW specialist, who did the work for himself originally)

Make sure the breather one way valve isn't blocked. Common to happen on these and fire oil out of the dipstick. But if you are getting oil past the rings, you need to check the ring gaps. You might even need to check for bore wear.

The rings are the same for the PY engine as they are for the AAV & NZ engines. I bought my rings from VW as they werent much more than non-genuine ones. The only non-genuine ones I was offered were Nippon, which I didn't fancy.
