Converting to EFI - Turbo

Currently I'm putting parts together for an ABD turbo. The original idea was to run an R5 carb with GK inlet (its a solid lifter head) but since reading various sources, there are considerable gains to be had using EFI instead.

Additionally, spark timing seems to be a big thing, and getting it right again appears to be an important part of getting the most from the engine.

Therefore my questions are;
1. What is needed to convert a carbed mk2 to EFI (forget injectors, mani etc,) i'm thinking looms, sensors etc?
2. What is needed to convert to ECU controlled ignition?
3. Is the G40 management fully mappable, and are there any major gains to be had from running stand alone systems? (e.g. mega squirt/spark)

To keep costs down, and compatability to the max, I want to use as many stock parts as possible as well. Finally, is a knock sensor essential? if so, can it be placed on the block? (bracket lug e.g.)

read Chris heys (cheys) build on his 1.3 turbo... mostly g40 ecu/loom IIRC

Hi Prankstar,
Your first two questions will have been mostly covered on Club Polo with people sticking GT engines in Mk2s. I turbo'd an AAV in a Mk3 which is obviously already EFI and so a bit easier.

Engine management options - wow! There are a lot of options. In the end it comes down to a few questions:

- Can you see a point in the future where you will want to transfer the ECU etc to another car? (say you get interested in 205s for example)
- Do you have the skills or willingness to learn how to map your car? (cost saving)
- What's your budget?
- Do you like 'tinkering' i.e would you like the option to tweak the map to maximum summer/winter effect?
- By using standard engine sensors and parts from say, GT management you would make some savings, but this would require aftermarket management.

I'm writing a 'How-to' guide, but with everything at the moment it's just finding the time to complete it. Until that's done I'll PM you my mobile number in case you have any questions.

Cheers for the link Pete

Another link for discussions during the initial stages of my build, lots of useful info including the knock sensor mount:
