Engine died!

The car was being driven home and at low speed just died. Tried to start it again but there was just a big clunk. Put it in gear and rocked it back and forth a few times but still a big clonk on trying to start. Took it round the back and using jump leads connected to a big battery and tried again. It then turned over but didnt fire. Pulled each lead off the distributer cap and got a spark from all 4. Still no luck tho. Very concerned about the big clonk! But as it turned over presume its not seized. Had no warning lights prior to dying. Cam belt still in one peice. Any help or suggestions welcomed!

Are there any instructions on here on how to check the timing? And on how to see if the belt has slipped?

Incidentally... we had the head off the engine to find pretty much all the valves were bent and could see the indentations in the top of the pistons. So looking at reconditioned engines now!  Looks like the timing belt did jump as all round the inside of the belt about 25% of the width of the teeth was shredded.

Thanks for that! Will have a good close look at ours and at the pistons to see the extent of the damage!

Getting the head sorted but what about the pistons? There are indentations in the top but the cylinder bore is good and no burrs on the outside of the pistons. Rings appear to be free in their grooves. Can they be re used?
