Why drive a g40?
« on: March 20, 2008, 11:24:01 am »
after about 7 years of driving g's I ask myself why i'm drawn to them?

For me it has to be

1. no depreciation (or very little)
2. relative ease of maintenance
3. decent mpg
4. fun due to speed and stealth factor

what about everyone else???>

The quirkeyness and how everything feels really basic, makes it so fun to drive.

I think everything above and what else can you get for the money that will be as much fun. I do like it that no-one has heard of them either.

I've not driven mine for at least a month now and cant wait to get in it again on Saturday when I take it for its MOT.

For me it's the raw driving of no bullshit electronics like power steering, abs, etc etc.  for that sort of power and fun you need to spend a lot more on something like a kit car.  the scarcity of the car is something i like and the simplicity of them as a whole.

new cars are shite in my opinion and i hate the fact everyone has the same cars, i'd hate to buy a civic type R knowing that if i drove around i could see another 5 exactly the same bought by sheep  who dont know how to make a choice on their own. mini's are a good example of this.

I like how they are perfectly simple inside, 3 heater settings and thats it, not hundreds of choices and directions which are just pointless....  a bit like having all the sky channels money can buy but you never watch anything because you spend all your time looking for something better.  sometimes....less is more.....

I haven't driven mine daily for years so I guess should stay out of this thread!

Hmmm I must admit after demoting mine to a weekend car and driving the golf everyday I can see the appeal of something bigger and comfier. Makes me appreciated the G more when I get back into it though.

A mutated string of nucleotides that form a string of DNA that has an attraction to old death traps.

I've driven a few cars and nothing seems to have the same urgency when you press the loud pedal.

bang for buck ratio you get.  Such fun to drive. You have to be on the ball all the time, which is something I love, even though most people see this as a negative. Easy to work on and best of all nobody expects anything from the little polo

Yeah I'd have to echo what others have said, I can't think of anything else which offers the same bang for buck. 180bhp/tonne for £120 per year road tax, near zero depreciation and it'll do 34mpg on the motorway. I'm quite glad it's not a daily any more though, means I can lengthen the rebuild intervals and enjoy driving it.

Because it has so much character, for a start the mk3 is such a cool shape hench why i bought one in the first place but when i found out there was a supercharged model i had to have one, the fact that is just a 1.3 gets people every time, an they are such stealth cars regardless of the G40 badge which most people ask what it means anyway  :D

Oh an they are fooking quick to  LOL
