snapped a bolt!!
« on: June 18, 2011, 10:03:49 pm »
Snapped one of the bolts that bolds the camshaft down. Its snapped halfway down so should be easy to get hold of. Is this just a stud like the exhaust manifold or is it a drill out job?

Nearly bloody there too :(

Going to need a 0-10nm wrench John. I think these nuts go down to about 6nm.

The studs are M7, so abit of a pain to get hold of, M7 helicoil kits are about £35 if you need one. Not the end of the world but a pain none the less.

Remember the nuts are torqued, then angle tighten.

Local engineering supplies sorted me one, here's a pic of the buggers:

Sods law means I only found out once the engine was fully built... ::)

Try to get the full helicoil kit, so you've got the coil insertion tool, and a little punch to snap the tang off at the end.

heli coils are ok but you better off with going to a cylinder head specilists with the cam cap and get them to put an "insert" in the are a solid tube threaded on both sides and fitted with small hand tool. Much better than helicoils.

cheers grant

The thing i found atad scary was the fact it was very easy indeed to get it out. Only needed 2secs with a pair of pliers and hey presto. Surely they must be abit tighter than that?
