It could be nothing more than a tracking issue.
Get it down to a decent tyre place that knows how to use their tracking equipment. Probably toeing out a bit. IIRC they should be tracked parallel.
If you still have the front anti roll bar fitted, check the condition of the body mounting bushes and that the roll bar in centred correctly.

ah ok i,ll try that i hope you are right

G40HR

Does anyone know of a decent place around Romford (no joke please and no I am not blond!  ;D) to to the tracking on a G40?

I need the tracking done as I replaced my clutch and whilst there changed the inner and outer CV joint. Now the car pulls but also the steering wheel shakes at speeds over 40 miles per hour.

Elite in Rainham are hopeless as a) they keep setting off the tracker unit and b) are not very good with female customers. Lindvale keep telling me I need 4 wheels alignment done and I keep telling them that is not possible on a G40  >:(

Has anyone attempted to do it themselves, if so any pointers?

There is a small amount of movement on the rear beam from memory. So if it's been off in the past or come loose it's possible but I wouldn't have thought so!
All I did when I had mine off was to line it up with the previous wear marks and never had any issues. Tell them there's nothing to adjust on the rear. Or perhaps it's worth getting a male friend to try? I've never witnessed the whole "She's a woman lets charge her for more work than neccesary" thing, but then I've always worked with good people at the garages I've been at.

G40HR

He he they don't get past charging me more trust me. they just keep giving me to whole "oh dear look at the little girl in her polo" rubbish.
I get the same in the VR6 so maybe should not be suprised. I don't bit at it anymore most of the time, its been too many years since I started running cars as a hobby!
I am going to see if I can get it sorted this week, even if I have to get grumpy at someone in a garage  >:(

G40HR

Sorted, tacking fixed and I can happily admit there was nothing wrong with it. I think I previously adjusted the streeing wheel, forgot about it and when I fitted the new CV joints a couple of weeks ago must have corrected the tracking without realising.
Now all it needed was to put the steering wheels straight.
But thank you ereeiz for recommending local garages as that is where I ended up with my heart in my mouth and they worked wonders. Top guys and for £31 I am happy to admit I was wrong to dismiss them!

Hi poloeatonm

Don't know if you've had any luck sorting the prob of your G40 pulling to one side, but years ago i had the same prob i checked everything trying to sort it out, eventually i got it up on a ramp at a mates tyre garage and after 3 of us checking all around for some time we spoted that the chassis had started to split, it was the inner chassis that the end of the gearbox butts up close to.
The g40 engine has so much tourqe and i don't know that vw did much to strengthen the chassis form the standard polo and also i used to drive like a dick, lots of gas and always dumping the clutch!
I manage to get it welded and strengthened without the gearbox having to be removed, still cost a few quid as i remember.

Ive just scrapped my polo that pulled to one side because there were so many splits on the legs it was evil to drive glad it's gone
