Just checking before I buy are mk2 alternator the same fitment as mk3 I'm assuming they are but may be wrong.

I think a mk2 one is the same fitting as a mk3 non-g40 one.  G40 ones are different.

g40 alternators are 65 amp, mk2/3 alternators are 45 or 55amp. therefore it pays to get a proper G alternator and have your old one refurbed.

I have a spare g40 alternator if required.

Needs to be a non g40 item as the housing is different as I'm using a turbo it needs to be tensioned differently that's why I'm after a 55 amp one just seen one in the bay advertised as a mk2 one pretty cheap to get me going, if I need more power later ( which I doubt I will ) I'll stick a 90a on there from an early golf which fits with a bit of modification !

oh ok, makes more sense now.  Yeah a mk2 one should be OK.  I use a non-g40 mk3 one on mine which is lower powered but since I have no radio and hardly any electrical things in the car it's not a problem.

only difference is some are spade connection and some are bolt on terminal.

I have a mk2 jetta one for mine -  refurbed from the bay and its 65amp and same as a non-g40 fitting/electrical connection!

The tensioner is a fixed length bracket on a G40 as it's tensioned by moving the charger. On other Polos the tensioner is a variable length thing. I had a G40 missing its charger and it just had a normal Polo tensioner fitted on the G40 alternator.

I'm using. Non g40 engine mount though, I thought g40 alternators matched up to only g40 engine mounts and the same with non g40.
Thanks for the heads up about the connections pete just been looking on the bay and the one I was thinking of getting has blades think Ive seen a 90a one on there looks same fitment as polo with bolts for lug connections on it think it's for a 1.6 d jetta so mite give that ago as it's only £18 more than the 65 amp and I like my stereo bits in my car.
Thanks for the help every one

The mountings changed from Mk.2 and Mk.3. The top pivot bolt is M8 on the Mk.2 and M10 on the Mk.3 so make sure you have the correct mount to go with the alternator. There were some Mk.2 65A alternators(I have one on my Mk.2)

got a tansporter one in the end which is 90a and fits straight on, thanks for the info though
