Put my head on yesterday thought it was a bit strange there was no locating dowles was a bit of a pain in the ass the line up and it says in haynes there's dowels but I didn't see any when I split the engine. Are there any !?

no there aren't

I use 4 old head bolts with the heads cut off and a screwdriver flat in the top. Put them in the 4 corner holes, only a couple of threads in.  Then add gasket nice nad central, then add head. Remove bolts with screwdriver and add head bolts!
