Buying a K03
« on: March 26, 2009, 02:34:37 pm »
decided i am going to buy a k03 turbo for my conversion on my gt. There are alot of them for sale on ebay but how do i know which one to buy ? They are all k03's but some of them are different shapes, i have been told to use model off the passat 1.8T but as audi, skoda and seat are all the same family does it really mater?
Could someone please let me know what to buy. Or sell me the right one!  ;)

Thanks

The K03 you want is off a longitudinal 1.8t engine so thats Passat/A4 and (A6?).

Beware which ones you buy off eBay, there are chinese copies where people have had mixed results.
Some have lasted quite a few k at 20+psi and others have blown up at the thought of it  ;D

Same goes with buying second hand, just have a good look round, they are about.

yeah the important bit is that it comes off a longitudinally mounted engine as the transverse ones, even though they are the same turbo core and same size internal housings have weird shaped outlets and I think at least in some cases, the turbine housing is part of the exhaust manifold casting.

Thats what i thought, the outlets on some of them looks far to long just wouldn't fit. Going to try and find a good condition 2nd hand charger. Again if any1 has any turbo parts for sale let me know!

you mean turbocharger when you say charger?  They're not hard to find in scrapyards, plenty of 20vt B5 passats, a4s, skodas etc... about in yards.

Yeah i ment turbocharger, i went on the rothe website and for the manifold it's 272 euro's so i am going to buy either the manifold or the turbo depending if i can find a nice K03, the next thing after that would be the cam as i have read that the G40 or the GT don't really work well with the turbo conversion. got plenty of time though aiming for next spring/summer.

Thanks for the advice again guys.

GT cam's do work quite well mate and are easy to get hold of so you could use one for the time being.

GT cam will work, I've read a few german forums where they are using them.  THey're not ideal but will work with a turbo a lot better than the standard g40 one.

I found a Borg Worner k03 from america. apparently much better than the jap versions and around the same price. i think i paid approximately £250 for it brand new!
