G40 low oil pressure.
« on: September 15, 2010, 11:27:42 am »
Right i have an oil pressure gauge in the G40 and today it has decided to start playing up.  Sits Dead in the centre and does not move as the oil heats up/cools down/or when driving it.  Checked the wires that lead from the back of the gauge to the back of the head and there doesn't seem to be an issue there.  Anyone got any ideas?  Guessing the sender could be funked?  I have just bought a spare oil pressure gauge to see what readings that decides to give but haven't had time to put it on yet as it was rainging heavy last night.  The gauge has started to give all sorts of readings including a flat zero at idle when warm at one point which was super worrying.  Car not really being driven at all until figured it out as don't want to cause something major.

If the gauge/sender is not the issue what are the usual reasons for oil pressure to be on the low side?  Headgasket gone?  Weak oil pump?  Any other suggestions?

To add there are no other running issues or strange/upsetting noises, smoke or excess oil firing out anywhere.

Got home from work and fitted a new gauge and a new sender and checked out the pressure. Seems a load better and when oil really hot was roughly 20 psi on the new gauge at idle. Which is better than the 0psi it was reading when hot like before. Much happier with that reading.
