Loud Ticking after long drives
« on: August 20, 2010, 09:41:34 am »
After long journeys on the motorway (sitting at 3K +) the engine starts tapping loudly, it sounds like an old fiesta! Theres plenty of oil in and its regularly changed, Im not sure if its actually in the engine or the injectors.

Anybody got any ideas?

Cheers, Danny

your tappets probably need replacing or servicing (if you choose to service them there is a guide on club gti)

mine did that, but after servicing then it was fine on all but the hottest days.

It also helps if you get an oil cooler - i've not though as mine is stock.

Cheers pete, for the time being is it a risk to the car?

If not sorted it will damage the cam or valves, or both.

Sorry to resurrect this old thread but im weighing up the possibility of an oil cooler fixing the problem rather than changing the tappets. If the car is at say 3.5K rpm for long motorway periods would the oil be getting hot enough and therefore thin enough to make the tappets noisy?

I don't wanna change the wrong thing, and an oil cooler would obviously provide a healthier environment for the charger.

Well it doesn't sound right! 3,5k shouldn't give the oil any trouble! I live in Greece with temperatures close to 40oC in the summer and it only does that taping noise if I drive the car hard for over 15 minutes with rpm close to 6k. Maybe you should try some other oil and see how that goes!

an oil cooler is a good idea anyway but I doubt it'll solve your tappets problem.

tappets are gunked up anyway by the sounds of it.

but adding an oil cooler TOO would be a decent idea

If the tappets look ok and you're not going to change the cam, you could try rebuilding them.

Has been mentioned before, but not sure if the link has already been posted, so here it is (again?).
