Lots and lots, especially if you use genuine parts. Throw in a cam and adjustable pulley, toothed supercharger pulleys, ported head etc. etc, and it creeps up even further. I don't really want to tot it up, but I'd say my current spend is at least 2 grand with more to go. The only labour charge in that is £300 for an engine builder to strip and build the bare bottom end. And I've not paid to have my head ported yet.

Same here dude. i've only just started mine and i'm up to £555 just for pistons, new crank and a rebore and i'm doing it as cheep as poss but without cutting corners. The trick is to shop around for OE quality parts but there are certain things that have to be OE and they're the ones that sting your wallet. As far as rebuilding engines yourself goes it's possibly the simplest you'll find and all the info you need will be in a haynes manual but not the cheepest to replace if you destroy it by do something wrong.

well i see at jabba sport they do a rebuild for £2040 inc VAT that all parts and labour? so im guessing that could be a fairly good price then?

cheers

Ross, the amount you spend really depends on how far you need or want to go.
The Polo engines are inherently tough units and don't wear that much even in G40 spec. Unless the engine has been damaged in some way there is no reason why you should replace everything.
Completely strip engine down and chemically clean all components.
Check for any damage or excessively worn components.
Hone block.
Fit new set of piston rings.
Replace the main and big end bearings.
Check/replace valve guides.
Regrind valves into their seats.
Rebuild with all new gaskets and oil seals.
Obviously replace water pump, cam belt and charger belts.
Usual new thermostat, filters, plugs, cleaned injectors etc. etc.
Any decent engineering workshop can do it, there is nothing special/complex about the core of a G40 engine.
Having the work done professionaly is obviously gonna cost a fair bit, but you shouldn't have to spend thousands on parts unless you are going for high power or rebuilding a badly damaged engine.
I can't see any reason why it needs to be taken to Jabba Sport to be done.
Good luck with it Ross.

as said above, my car had done 89k and i stripped the engine, did exactly as above, it is not that hard a task really, i did have my mechanic on hand to pick his brain, and borrow a few tools.

but the real questions to ask yourself are how long do you intend on having the car, doing all that then selling in the next year or so will be a total waste of time

g40Ross

well i intend on keeping her until the death mate!
