Timing belt

Replacing this today but i have a question, haynes states check for manufactures markings for correct rotation, if none present make your own. Mine has none on and it was from VW. How can i tell which way is the correct way?

IIRC its when you are putting the same belt back on when direction matters, e.g head gasket repair.
