The future's bright!

It's got a busy few months ahead:
- Mid Feb - service with VW filters and fluids, plus Mocal oil cooler to go on, at VW2000 specialist garage near Peterborough. Nick Goodyear's doing the work.
- End of Feb - off to Sussex, where it'll be rolling roaded to check what it's putting out at the moment, then QEP will be porting the head and fitting an uprated camshaft
- March - onwards to Regal Autosport for a full rolling road setup and remap
- End of March - Gaz are building me a coilover kit, I just need to get my paws on some spare front struts (anyone?)

Woohoo! An update! With pics!

I've spent the day at VW2000 near Peterborough servicing the Polo with Nick Goodyear and fitting its new oil cooler. :)

Because of my foglights and the complete lack of space, I decided the best place to mount it was under the number plate. Admittedly this involved much more dismantling than expected. I thought at first we'd be able to drop it in by removing the grille, but that didn't work. So we removed the front bumper:

This still didn't give us enough access, and we found the horn bracket was getting in the way, so whipped off the front bumper bar:

It's a flimsy bloody thing. You can see the horn bracket in the middle of the bar:

First thing to get sorted was the thermostat sandwich plate, so we could mock up the route of the hoses to the cooler. Check out my rat look brace bar. :(

With it all connected up we could fill the car with oil and let it run to check for leaks and bleed the coolant system. We had a little seepage where the hoses connect to the top of the cooler, but nothing a little tightening couldn't solve. :)

I cut holes in the two flaps of plastic for the oil hoses to run through and ran them down the back of the bumper bar so it looks tidy. Everything's nicely hidden.

Here's the car back in one piece, you can see the oil cooler below the number plate. I know it's neglectful but my lack of cash last year means the Polo's not had a service since late 2007. It's not done massive mileage since, but the oil was pretty nasty. It's much happier now, sounds healthier and I don't get noisy tappets when I give it a good ragging. Result!

And here's the street outside my house, with my plaything for the weekend. Some old dude was staring at the Scirocco when I got back from the garage, and then nearly shot his load with excitement when I pulled up in the Polo. Weird, but flattering I guess.

Good work Alex. You might want to get hold of some mesh to guard that oil cooler from stone impacts. They are pretty brittle the matrix of the coolers. Last thing you want is to loose oil pressure when having a blast.

I was wondering about that, it's pretty vulnerable.

I'd be a bit concerned with the length of the oil cooler pipes, the oil has to go a long way ! Could well be fine, but I run the line as short as possible to on the right side of pumping capacity. Either way it looks a pretty tidy installation.

Tut tut for not changing the oil for such a long time !

Yeah the oil lines are pretty big tbh, but it does seem to get around them ok. Think Automotive, who supplied the kit, pre-made them up in that length. We had to find a route for them where they wouldn't get caught in the charger belts or rub on anything. Conveniently they do seem to be about the right length to go around either side of the radiator.

I now have no ICE in my car!

Never thought I'd actually do this, but faced with nowhere to fit gauges the head unit had to go, and that left the amp and wiring kit redundant. I've left the speakers and head unit loom behind, just in case, but this lot has all come out this afternoon:

Plenty of room for gauge wiring etc in the dash, unlike the Passat:

Got a new sticker as well, thanks to Ricci from work. Love it :D  :

It's from a Canadian company called Duostyling. The early ones were shit but I've had no issues with this one.

You could go all OEM and have the manifold done in brown, just like it was from the factory. :)
